Three Carleton grad students and 10 undergrads concluded their trip to Antarctica on Jan. 9th as part of a an international team participating in Students On Ice.
Environmental Engineering PhD student Matthew Russell, and Earth Sciences master’s students Danielle Dionne and Dave Melanson had the time of their lives.
Group leader Dr. Claudia Schröder-Adams, professor of Earth Sciences sent this update at the final day of the expedition: “What a send off! Half a dozen wandering Albatross, countless other fascinating seabirds, and a beautiful sunset welcoming us back to Cape Horn.”
“Although this expedition wasn’t without its challenges, we each found inspiration in the landscapes, wildlife and amazing history,” shares the professor. “Danielle felt awed by the silent icy landscapes of Antarctica with its tall mountains and glaciers. Dave particularly enjoyed observing the behaviours and interactions of the wealth of polar species encountered. Matt’s breath was taken away by the humbling grandeur of the kilometer-scale tabular icebergs, seen from a zodiac.”
Adds Schröder-Adams: “For all of us, the experience has been unforgettable, has opened our eyes to new possibilities and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Carleton University and many other donors.”
