Representatives of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA), along with members of both graduate student associations at Carleton and the University of Ottawa, met recently with representatives of the City of Ottawa to discuss the City’s child care subsidy to graduate students.

For the past couple of months, there has been confusion about whether or not the City would continue to fund child care subsidies for graduate students in Ottawa.

This is a copy of the letter that Wallace Clement, Dean of FGPA, wrote to the City as a follow-up to the meeting.

The following information is from the Jan. 30th issue of the Graduate Students’ Association’s Grad Bulletin.

Childcare Update – Important Information for Student Parents

Student action works! In a recent meeting with the City of Ottawa, your GSA worked to have some of the exclusionary policies that had been put in place, changed. This means that your file should be reviewed again.

If you have recently been rejected from qualifying for a child care fee subsidy by the City of Ottawa, or you currently have a subsidized child care spot and have been told it will be removed, please contact your child care subsidy officer.

Because the program is overwhelmed with clients and underfunded, the City of Ottawa will now be prioritizing people based on need. However, if you are a low-income graduate student, you are still eligible to be considered, but you may not receive the subsidy if it is deemed that others have a greater need than you and your family.
