New graduate students and new TAs are strongly encouraged to attend FGPA’s Winter Orientation on Friday, Jan. 15.  Register Now!  Also on that date, the GSA will hold a social for new and incoming students from 3 to 6 p.m. in Mike’s place. There will be appetizers as well as some board games.

Important Dates & Deadlines

ACADEMIC DEADLINES

Jan. 6  Winter-term classes begin

Jan. 14 – U-Pass Opt-Out deadline for Winter term

Jan. 15 Orientation for new grad students and new TAs

Jan. 19 Last day for registration and also to change courses or sections for winter-term courses.

Jan. 19 – Students who have not deposited (via automated upload) the final copy of their thesis to the office of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs must register.

Jan. 31 Last day for a fee adjustment when withdrawing from Winter term and Winter portion of Fall/Winter term courses

Feb. 12 April exam schedule now available

Feb. 12-20  Fall term deferred exams will be held

Feb. 15   Family Day. The University will be closed.

TRAINING & CAREER WORKSHOPS

Jan. 8 – Storyteller training

Jan. 23  EDC’s Winter TA Training Day

Jan. 20-March 30 – Register now for the EDC’s Certificate in University Teaching

Many of our winter term workshops in Grad Navigate have now been added. Stay tuned, as more will be added shortly. Note that Mitacs will be offering the following workshops at Carleton:

Jan. 19 to 20 – Foundations of Project Management I
Jan. 26 – Skills of Communication
March 4 – Practise Your Presentation Skills I
March 15 to 16 – Foundations of Project Management II – Ottawa, ON

You can also access online training through MyGradSkills.ca. Please note that these online training modules do not count towards paid training hours for TAs.

TAs – it can take up to two weeks before your attendance is recorded and you are credited with your paid training hours. This is because this process is manual and time-consuming.  You are strongly encouraged to track your progress independently of the TA Management System in order to ensure its accuracy. In the event of a discrepancy, you are responsible for ensuring your training is captured in Carleton Central.

 

AWARDS & COMPETITION DEADLINES

Mitacs offers several funding opportunities for graduate students. You can apply any time, except there are two deadline dates each year for the Mitacs Elevate program. Check out:
(a) Mitacs Accelerate (Funding starts at $15,000 for research internships with industry or non-profit partners)
(b) Mitacs Elevate ($57,500 annual grant for two-year postdoctoral fellowships with industry or non-profit partners)
(c) Mitacs Globalink Research (Travel funding for research projects with international universities)
(d) Mitacs Step (Professional development workshops facilitated by industry leaders

Jan. 8 – Deadline to apply for a Law Foundation Fellowship

Jan. 29 – Deadline to enter SSHRC’s Storyteller Competition. Training session on Jan. 8

Jan. 29 Annual Autism Awards

Jan. 29 (5 p.m.) Deadline to apply for the Mitacs JSPS internship

Jan. 29 – Deadline to apply for the Grad Student Open Access Award

Feb. 1 Mackenzie King Travelling/Open Scholarship

Feb. 3 (4:59 p.m.) – Deadline to enter NSERC’s Science Action Competition

March 10 – Dan David Scholarship Deadline (PhDs and PDFs)

TA DEADLINES

The deadlines to apply for a Leave From Duties are:  April 30 (summer term), Aug. 31 (fall term) and Dec. 31 (winter term).  (access form via Carleton Central)

“Pedagogical” training hours must be submitted by March 30 for a full academic year TAship or a winter-only TAship, and by Nov. 30 for a fall-only TAship.

Deadline to apply to be an “out-of-priority” TA for the fall term is Sept. 1; and for the winter term is Jan. 1, 2016.
