As ordered by the Medical Officer of Health of the City of Ottawa, Carleton University has been required to adopt a policy to ensure that no member of the public is permitted to enter or remain in a publicly accessible area of a building on campus unless they are wearing a mask in a manner that covers their nose, mouth and chin. Please note that FGPA’s weekly Grad Café sessions will be on hiatus for the month of July, but keep an eye out for when they return in August.

Hoping to Graduate This Fall?
We strongly encourage any students who want to graduate this fall to submit their supervisor-approved thesis, in examinable form, to their department by August 1.

News for International Students
Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced temporary biometrics collection exemptions for pending and new study permit, work permit, or visa applications from within Canada. For details, please visit this website.
Also, as a result of residing outside of Canada, international students studying in the Fall 2020 term are eligible to opt out of the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). Students residing outside of Canada should complete this form no later than September 30th, 2020. Failure to do so could result in UHIP fees being charged to your student account.

Indigenous Graduate Student Award Deadline Extended
The new Indigenous Graduate Student Award is given annually by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs to Canadian First Nation, Metis or Inuit Master’s or Doctoral graduate students. Recipients will be selected based on demonstrated financial need and academic merit. Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation to verify ancestry. This “proof of ancestry” documentation should be uploaded in their application as a supporting letter. Applicants need to go to Carleton Central (under “financial aid and awards” and then “online graduate award applications”), and search under the correct name. The deadline to apply has been extended to August 15th.

Register Now for Fall Orientation
Fall orientation for new graduate students and teaching assistants will be delivered online this fall. Incoming students can register for the general orientation session and TA Orientation sessions by clicking here. Registered students will receive further information about how to access the orientation materials before Academic Orientation Day (September 8).

Carleton’s Sarah Everts is Putting Science Journalism Under the Microscope
Halfway through the 2020 winter term, Carleton University’s CTV Chair in Digital Science Journalism, Sarah Everts, began discussing COVID-19 in her environmental reporting class.
