Mental Health Resources

As we get closer to the end of term, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed. There are lots of resources that can help you. Click here for more information. And a reminder that Health and Counselling Services is offering a virtual café to graduate students every Monday morning from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. EST. New Service for Sexual Violence Support

The CU Sexual Assault Support Centre is excited to announce a new online chat service for sexual violence support called CUSASC CHAT. This service is staffed by peer supporters and offers confidential, free support via text or web chat. To reach out and receive support, survivors of sexual violence can chat virtually or text 613-209-1142. CUSASC CHAT is open:

  • Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Friday, 1:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Help Shape the Future of Student Services

You are invited to join discussions with your peers about the future of student services on campus. The Office of the Vice-President (Students and Enrolment) is looking to hear your opinions, ideas and experiences related to topics such as mental health, accessibility, exams, career readiness and more. Your feedback will be used to inform changes to enhance and strengthen the services that shape the student experience at Carleton. Feedback is being collected throughout March 2021. All students who participate in the consultations will be entered into a draw to win a free item from Rodney’s House!

Showcase Your Research for GradFlix

This year, FGPA is hosting an exciting event for graduate students called GradFlix. It is replacing our participation in the Three Minute Thesis competition. The submission deadline is Tuesday, March 30. Updated information is available on this page.


Award Information

Graduate students will be informed of their scholarship status by the following:

  • OGS:  Beginning of March. If you are successful, and you originally filled in a paper submission, you need to fill in this acceptance form and return to leslie.main@carleton.ca asap. If you submitted your application online and received a successful result, the acceptance form will be located in your Carleton Central application.
  • NSERC PhD:  End of March
  • SSHRC PhD:  End of April
  • CIHR PhD:  End of April
  • CGS Master’s (all):  April 1 through the portal. If you are successful, you need to fill out this acceptance form and send to leslie.main@carleton.ca asap.

The Jackson Family Scholarship in Community Engagement will be awarded to outstanding graduate students enrolled in the Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program, who demonstrate a strong potential for leadership and innovation in community engagement on high-priority issues to local nonprofits, governments and businesses. TAs - You Can Still Claim Pedagogical Training Hours

Here are more professional development opportunities coming up over the next week. TAs can claim five of these workshop hours as paid pedagogical training hours. You must complete these hours by March 30 for a full academic year or a winter-only TAship.

International Students Take Note

Please check out updates on the ISSO website:

The University Health insurance plan (UHIP) is mandatory medical health insurance for international students. However, if you are taking online Carleton classes from outside of Canada during the 2020/21 academic year due to Covid-19, UHIP is not required. Apply for  a refund by completing the UHIP Opt-Out Form. Deadline to opt out is March 31.

Inside Senate - February 26

The latest edition of Inside Senate is now available. The highlight of the meeting was the approval of graduation for 1,064 undergraduate and 413 graduate students. Congratulations to the first 1,477 students of Carleton’s Class of 2021.


Board of Governors and Senate Standing Committees

The Carleton University Board of Governors will be meeting remotely on Thursday, March 11. Members of the community are welcome to observe the open session which begins at 3 p.m. Those interested in attending the open session are asked to email the University Secretary (amanda.goth@carleton.ca) by 4 p.m. on March 10. Meeting materials will be posted a week ahead of the meeting on the Board of Governors website.

The Carleton University Senate is calling for nominations for students to serve on a variety of Senate Standing Committees. The term of office is one year and will begin on July 1, 2021. Students may serve on Senate committees without having been previously elected to a governance position. There are currently eight committees with graduate student vacancies. To learn more, please review the Call for Nominations.  Applications can be submitted on the Senate website by March 31. If you have any questions, please contact Assistant University Secretary, Kathy McKinley.


Carleton Launches Effort with Industry and Government to Help Women Pursuing STEM Careers

As we approach the start of International Womxn’s Week in Ottawa, it remains a hard truth that systemic roadblocks are still faced by many women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math. While women repeatedly overcome these barriers in both academia and the workforce, there are enthusiastic efforts from allies in industry and institutions worldwide to oppose these unwarranted hurdles. Carleton’s newly launched Women in Engineering and Information Technology program is taking up that challenge.

Carleton Master’s Sociology Student to Receive Royal Ottawa Award for Mental Health Work

Charlotte Smith, a Carleton University master’s student in Sociology, has faced overwhelming challenges throughout her life. Undaunted, she has channelled these experiences into her academic, advocacy and activist work. For these actions, and for sharing her story of recovery to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness, Smith will be awarded the Personal Leader for Mental Health award at the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health’s 2021 Inspiration Awards.

Important Dates and Deadlines

For a complete list of all official academic and financial dates and deadlines, please go to the Registrar’s websiteFor all financial matters, go to Student Accounts.

And a couple of reminders. If you are planning to graduate in June, you need to apply to graduate by April 1.

Also, the date for graduate students to electronically submit their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs has been extended to May 31. If you have not done so by this date, you will not be eligible to graduate in June and will have to register for the Summer 2021 term.


FAQs

There have been two updates to the FAQs for current graduate students over the past week: Will there be a Spring 2021 (June) convocation ceremony?  AND ALSO Is there an update about programs for this Fall (2021)?  There have been no updates to the FAQs for prospective graduate students over the past week.
