As announced on April 22, the Government of Canada committed $291.6M to support students and postdoctoral researchers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, through the federal research funding agencies. All award holders of research training programs covered by the Tri-agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide (TARTAHG) that end between March and August 2020 can benefit from a four-month extension, provided they meet certain conditions.

Tri-council award extensions will be applied to student accounts until the decisions are sent to the institution. Completing the online document is only the first step in the process.

Mechanism to submit a request for NSERC and SSHRC

Agency staff will contact award holders directly. Award holders will receive, no later than June 19, 2020, a system-generated email that will include a link to access and fill out an electronic attestation form. They will have until July 3 to complete this process and accept or decline the extension. If they do not receive the system-generated email by June 19, 2020, they should first check their spam email folder and then contact either NSERC at, or SSHRC at CIHR will be providing detailed instructions on their process in a separate communication.

The method through which the student receives award funds will remain the same. A list of award holders who have accepted the four-month paid extension will be posted on the GSAP for institutions. Contact the relevant agency should there be any discrepancies between the GSAP and your own listings. We estimate four to six weeks to process the payment. All transfer of funds to the institutions will be completed by September 30, 2020.

We invite you to refer the frequently asked questions and to the COVID-19 webpages for CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC for agency program updates.
