The 2024 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship competition has officially launched!

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition (Bantings) has officially launched! We encourage Carleton Faculties and faculty members to open discussions with potential Banting candidates. The Bantings are intended to support world class, Canadian and international postdoctoral researchers, who will become the research leaders of tomorrow. These are highly competitive awards, designed for exceptional candidates who are almost ready to apply for a faculty position.

Opportunity:

It is the responsibility of the individual Faculties to determine whether to permit their Departments, Schools, or Programs to host a Banting postdoctoral fellow.

Bantings are Institutional awards where the candidate is expected to demonstrate not only research excellence but also a unique fit within the priorities of the Host Institution. Therefore, to ensure that the strongest candidates are put forward, Carleton has adopted a multi-phased approach to determine institutional support. In order to attract the strongest candidates, we encourage those who are interested in hosting a Banting, and approved by their Faculty to do so, to begin seeking out candidates.

Eligibility:

There are several eligibility criteria, including the condition that Applicants to the 2024 Banting program fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree. Please refer to the Banting program website for full details relating to eligibility.

Funding Available:

$70,000 per year (taxable)
2 years (non-renewable)

Carleton-specific Details:

An internal committee will be constituted to review applications and determine which will be endorsed by the University for submission to the national competition.
The institutional contribution will be determined by the Office of the Vice-Provost (Research and International) and the Faculty for endorsed candidates.

How to Apply:

Candidates must first apply for the Banting Fellowship through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA) by completing the mandatory Administrative Candidate Eligibility Form. This form provides essential information about the prospective Banting candidate, informs the Faculty about there being a potential Banting candidate, and permits the candidate’s eligibility to be ascertained based on the data provided.

This form must be completed by the candidate and their supervisor, discussed with and approved by the Department Chair (or equivalent), and submitted online by 8:00 p.m. EST, Monday May 6, 2024.

Carleton’s Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA) launches internal Banting competition. Candidates and Supervisors may begin the application process*	Starting on April 11, 2024
Candidates and supervisors submit Administrative Candidate Eligibility Form online, which includes: supervisor’s statement (2 pages**), candidate’s CV (CCV or other format is acceptable at this stage), candidate’s Significance of Research Contributions (1 page), candidate’s Significance of Leadership Contributions (1 page), and candidate’s Proposal Overview† (1 page)	Monday May 6, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
FGPA reviews the above submissions, informs relevant Chairs/Directors of candidates’ respective applications, and sends the submissions to the FGPA Banting Adjudication Committee‡.	Thursday May 9, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
The Associate Dean (Planning and Awards) meets with relevant Faculty Associate Deans (Research) to review submissions and determine which candidates will be endorsed by Carleton University.	Between Friday May 10 and Friday May 24, 2024
FGPA contacts candidates and supervisors to inform them of whether the University will endorse their application. Endorsed candidates and their respective supervisors are provided with preliminary feedback and encouraged to continue developing their application.	Approximately Tuesday May 28, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
Internal full application developed and submitted to FGPA. Candidates and Supervisors are given meeting options to further review and refine their application, working with the FGPA Banting Adjudication Committee. Meetings will be scheduled by FGPA.	By Tuesday June 18 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
FGPA Banting Adjudication Committee† meet with candidates and supervisors to review and refine applications. Additional meetings will be scheduled as needed.	Between June 24 and July 28, 2024
Penultimate application developed and sent to FGPA.	Wednesday August 28, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
FGPA final administrative review is conducted and feedback regarding the administrative review (not content review) is sent to candidates and supervisors.	Thursday September 5, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
Letters of endorsement are sent to candidates and supervisors.	Tuesday September 10, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
Candidate submits final application to Banting Secretariat.	Tuesday September 17, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

* As per Banting criteria.

** Note that Banting allows supervisors to submit up to 4 pages. However, at this stage in the competition, we ask that you limit your statement to 2 pages.
