33 years ago, a man walked into a classroom at École Polytechnique de Montréal (the university’s faculty of engineering) and brutally murdered 14 women in a horrific act of gender-based violence. This act shook our nation to its core and in response, the Government of Canada designated December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Following two years of commemorating White Ribbon Day online, Carleton’s Faculty of Engineering and Design returned to holding an in-person remembrance ceremony, gathering in the university’s new Engineering Design Centre.

A special honorary plaque that commemorates these 14 women is a new instalment for the Faculty of Engineering and Design and a physical reminder of the urgencies of the present and the need to act for the future we desire.

Creating Accessible Physical Activity for Survivors of Family and Gender-Based Violence

Physical activity has significant mental, physical and emotional benefits, but getting to the gym or participating in a sport isn’t always tangible for those who have experienced or are experiencing family or gendered-based violence. Francine Darroch, a professor in Carleton’s Department of Health Sciences, is addressing this problem with a timely project.

Brightspace Update: Get Ready for Exams

As the fall term draws to a close, Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) has some tips and resources to help you get ready for finals:

  • Check out the TLS Brightspace Channel for short video tours: watch tours on how to submit assignments, take quizzes and view grades. You will learn tips and tricks for completing your assessments and accessing grades when they are ready. Learn about the interface early so you will be a pro by the time finals arrive.
  • Know how to troubleshoot error messages: Two common reasons students receive error messages include blocked cookies and browser caching woes. If you are encountering error messages in Brightspace or other Carleton tools, try clearing your browser cache and cookies or enable cookies in your browser.
  • Course visibility for winter: Course visibility is always a hot topic at the start of the term. If your winter term course isn’t showing up yet, there may be a few different factors at play. Your course may not have started yet, or your instructor may not have opened the course yet. Read more about course visibility and access.

If you have any questions, D2L provides on-demand technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year via email, chat and phone. For assistance with email, network or login issues, please contact the ITS Service Desk. You can also visit the Brightspace Student Support website for instructions for basic course tasks.
