The Challenge Campaign

Last week, Carleton University launched its new Challenge reputation campaign. One of the featured stories in the campaign is about a team of Carleton researchers, in partnership with the Bruyère Research Institute and AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence, that is developing supportive smart home systems to help older adults age in place safely and with dignity. Share Your Research in the 3MT and/or GRADflix

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs is running two research communication contests for graduate students this year: the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and GRADflix. As a bonus, you may be able to win some money. If you are interested in competing in either contest, please click here.

You might also be interested in participating in the 2nd Annual School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies Research Symposium that will take place virtually on Thursday April 7 but you need to submit your abstract by Sunday Feb. 20 at 11:59 p.m. Click here for details.

And you need to apply by Feb. 28 to present your research at the Centre for Research on Inclusion at Work’s virtual multidisciplinary conference. Of particular interest are papers exploring barriers to employment and organizational socialization for such populations as Black, Indigenous and people of colour, immigrants, women, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ2+ and youth. Award and Fellowship Opportunities

The Indigenous Graduate Student Award is awarded to Canadian First Nation, Metis or Inuit Master’s or Doctoral graduate students. Selection is based on demonstrated financial need and academic merit. Applicants need to provide supporting documentation to verify ancestry. This “proof of ancestry” documentation should be uploaded in their application as a supporting letter. To apply, go to Carleton Central (under “financial aid and awards” and then “online graduate award applications”) and search under the correct name. Deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2022. Note: Recipients from the Fall 2021 award competition are not eligible for the Winter 2022 awards.

Research Impact Canada has launched the 2021-22 edition of the RIC Engaged Scholarship Award for Graduate Students. Cash prizes are available in addition to opportunities to share their engaged research projects. For further information, go to this web page and the Call for applications. Deadline for applications is Feb. 28 at 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time). Applications should be submitted online at forms.researchimpact.ca. Questions: info@researchimpact.ca.

The Canadian Science Policy Fellowship is accepting applications from prospective fellows interested in undertaking a year-long policy position with a Canadian government host office beginning in Sept. 2022. Past and current participants in the program are not eligible. Applications will be accepted until Monday, Feb. 21, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. Click here for details.

Graduate students will be informed of their scholarship status by the following approximate dates:

  • OGS:  End of March
  • NSERC PhD:  End of April
  • SSHRC PhD:  End of April
  • CIHR PhD:  End of April

Ottawa Health is hosting a walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic for Carleton students, staff and faculty, including contract staff, TODAY Feb. 17 from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Residence Commons room 270.

As well, The Paul Menton Centre is hosting two weekly virtual graduate student groups . Please review the PMC group meeting guidelines before attending. The Graduate Student Support Group meets every Tuesday on Zoom from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Graduate Student Writing Group meets every Thursday on Zoom from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.


Psychology Wellness Centre

The Psychology Wellness Centre is a virtual centre staffed by psychology graduate students who are trained peer wellness coaches. If you are looking for non-urgent assistance with goal-setting, time-management, support to improve wellness goals, and information on other available wellness services at Carleton please complete this request form to meet with a peer wellness coach.

International Students - Just For You

Check out this workshop: Today Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. All About Post-Graduation Work Permits

International students experiencing financial hardship are eligible to apply to the International Student Relief Fund. The Fund is designed to provide emergency financial assistance to Carleton international students in Canada experiencing short term hardship who are not eligible for federal pandemic financial support. The funding is meant to cover an unforeseeable financial crisis and does not cover expenses relating to travel, rent, student fees, debts, anticipated future financial hardship, or costs that are related to being an academic student. Convocation 2020-2022

Carleton is planning to host in-person Convocation ceremonies for our graduates in June, subject to public health guidelines. We look forward to giving the graduating classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 the well-deserved opportunity to cross the stage to the cheers of their loved ones. Dr. Rafik Goubran will soon be entering the final year of his six-year term as vice-president (Research and International), and has stated his willingness to seek a second term. The advisory committee encourages the Carleton community to provide input and comments on Dr. Goubran’s performance by completing the VPRI Community Feedback form. Comments will be collected until March 1.


NPSIA Students Tackle Cybersecurity and Insider Risk

From ransomware to data theft and espionage, the risk posed by corporate and government insiders is a major concern. It’s also the focus of a capstone course on Canadian security issues that Professor Alex Wilner teaches at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, which has included a collaboration with CIBC.

New Lab to Design Better Orthopedic Implants and Surgical Techniques

The latest health technology partnership between Carleton University, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the hospital’s Division of Orthopedic Surgery is the creation of a new lab, named the Ottawa Orthopaedic Biomechanical Laboratory. The goal? To improve orthopedic implants and surgical repairs.

Bridging the Gap Between the Aviation Industry and Policy Makers

The International Air Transport Association is partnering with Carleton’s School of Public Policy and Administration to launch the Professional Certificate in Air Transport Principles and Policy. The online, instructor-led program is aimed at both public policy makers and aviation professionals and will be delivered through the school’s Transportation Policy and Innovation Centre.

TIM Grad Student Picked For Highly Selective Fellowship

Thousands of students from 20+ countries apply each term to be selected to be part of the MLH Fellowship. Fellows selected are matched to open source projects and with their peers, learn to contribute to these codebases. One of this spring’s MLH Fellows is Daman Arora, a master’s student in the Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program who is working towards a Master of Applied Business Analytics (MABA) degree.

Are You Coming on Campus?

A reminder to anyone now coming on campus to complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you also need to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit this as soon as possible. You can find the form in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Access to the tunnel system at Carleton University remains restricted to authorized individuals and those with approval to use the tunnels for accessibility purposes.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Feb. 18:  April examination schedule available online.

Feb. 21:  Statutory holiday. University closed.

Feb. 22-25:  Winter Break. Classes are suspended.

March 1:  Last day for graduate students to submit their supervisor-approved thesis, in examinable form to their supervisor.
