Carleton University will be officially closed for Canada Day on July 1 and most offices will be closed today, June 30 for Appreciation Day for Carleton employees. Essential operations, including registration and admissions, residences and safety services, will remain open.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, today is my (Lin Moody’s) last day at Carleton as I am retiring after 20 years at Carleton. Ellen Tsaprailis is the new Graduate Communications & Strategic Enrolment Officer with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and the new editor of TheGraduate@Carleton. I wish all of you success and a wonderful future!


Masks No Longer Required on Campus

Carleton has now paused its mandatory mask mandate.  However, we continue to strongly recommend masking when indoors, particularly if physical distancing cannot be maintained. Read more by clicking here.


Recognition and Resiliency: Convocation Returned to Carleton University

Though it was delayed by two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carleton University’s convocation celebrations came roaring back this June — hosting the university’s largest celebrations ever to honour the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Final GRADflix Videos

Recently, FGPA hosted its annual GRADflix contest in which students had to prepare a video that described their research in one minute or less. Here are the final four submissions.

FGPA congratulates all the students who participated in GRADflix and the 3MT this year. Remarkable research!


Registration Reminder

The fall and winter 2022-2023 class schedule and registration course planning tool are available in Carleton Central. Registration for returning students begins on Friday, July 8 based on pre-assigned time tickets. Your exact time ticket will be available on Carleton Central (log in through Carleton360) approximately one week preceding the registration time period.

There are several health and counselling resources that you can access. Please click here to see these resources. Check out these other resources available to grad students.

The Paul Menton Centre (PMC) is continuing to offer weekly virtual writing support for graduate students with disabilities over the summer. The Graduate Student Writing Group meets every Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. until August 16. Please register here. Before attending, you need to review the PMC group meeting guidelines. Registration with PMC is not essential for participation in this group.


GSA Survey

The Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) is carrying out a survey to assess the experience of Graduate Students with regard to services offered at Carleton University. Based on feedback received from this survey, the GSA intends to help develop future programming and support for the Graduate student community. They have asked that you kindly fill out the survey here.

New and Expanded Leadership in Equity and Inclusive Communities

A Very "Cool" Award

A Carleton University PhD student has been awarded the Canadian Northern Studies Trust Scholarship worth $10,000 from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) Program. Madelaine Bourdages, a PhD candidate in Geography at Carleton, won the award for her research on Microplastic Pollution Along the Mackenzie River.

Carleton’s Sprott School of Business Achieved Transforming Level in the Positive Impact Rating

The Sprott School of Business at Carleton University was recognized for its social impact and sustainability achievements when the Positive Impact Rating (PIR) results were launched recently at the UN PRME Global Forum in New York City. Sprott was one of 45 business schools from 21 countries worldwide that took part in the rating this year and achieved Level 4, making it a Transforming school within the PIR. Sprott ranked the highest among Canadian business schools in the PIR.

At Carleton, since 2014, an active Scholars at Risk (SAR) community has been hosting foreign academics who are facing threats to their lives because of their scholarship. Research: Innovations in Building Technology Key to Fighting Climate Change

In Canada, nearly 30 per cent of the energy consumed is used to heat and cool our buildings, producing more than 20 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Cynthia Cruickshank, a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering researcher at Carleton University, is confronting this challenge head-on as director of the new Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research.

Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) for late summer courses.

July 22
Last day for a full fee adjustment when withdrawing from late summer courses (financial withdrawal).

July 25
Last day for graduate students to submit their supervisor-approved thesis in examinable form to the department.

Civic holiday. University closed.
