Are You Graduating in June?

A final reminder that anyone graduating in June must apply to graduate by tomorrow, April 1. You can find more information about how to apply by going to this website. The Convocation ceremonies for 2020 and 2021 graduates will be held June 13-17. The ceremonies for 2022 graduates will be held the following week. Updates will be posted on the Convocation website.


Carleton's 3MT Competition Is Next Wednesday! All Are Welcome to Attend

The Carleton University Three Minute Thesis (3MT) contest is just around the corner. On April 6, each of our graduate student contestants will present their research in a compelling presentation of three minutes or less, with the goal of winning the top prize of $1000. Anyone from inside or outside Carleton is welcome to attend! Register here.


The GRADflix contest is on! Submit Your 1-minute Research Videos

GRADflix, which originated at the University of Waterloo, is a research video competition. Graduate students may submit one video about their research, and all videos must be no longer than one minute in length and contain both movement and sound. Your video could win you $1000! There's Still Time

The elections for the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) are right around the corner. Want to make a difference in your student association? Then run for one of the five executive positions with the GSA. Election nominations end on April 6 so get yours in now. For information about the roles and responsibilities, check out the GSA Bylaws on the GSA’s website. Election information can also be found on that website. Voting will take place on April 13 and 14. If you have any question comments or concerns feel free to reach out to vpo@gsacarleton.ca.


Summer Term

Carleton Central is now open for registration for Carleton University degree students. Be sure to visit Step 1 of Registration in Carleton Central to view your registration start time.

Fees for the Summer 2022 term should be posted by the end of March at Fee Estimator – Carleton University  Fees for the Fall 2022-Winter 2023 academic year should be posted late May or early June.


Professional Development Update

Your PD team has scheduled its final workshop for this term. It takes place today, March 31 at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Writing Grant Proposals.

FGPA will continue to offer one-on-one writing consultations to assist you with writing-related challenges, or to discuss the effectiveness of your research and writing strategies. To request a consultation, please fill out and submit this web form.


Need Help?

There are several health and counselling resources that graduate students can access. Please click here to see these resources. There are lots of other resources available to you.

Psychology graduate students who are trained peer wellness coaches can offer non-urgent assistance with goal-setting, time-management, support to improve wellness goals, and information on other available wellness services at Carleton. Please complete this request form to meet with a peer wellness coach.


When Will I Find Out if I have Won an OGS or Tri-council Award?

Graduate students will be informed of their scholarship status by the following approximate dates:

  • OGS:  End of March
  • CGS Master’s (all):  April 1 through the portal
  • NSERC PhD:  End of April
  • SSHRC PhD:  End of April
  • CIHR PhD:  End of April

A reminder that April 8 at 5 p.m. is the deadline to apply for the Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Research Award. It provides student funding of $10,000 to $15,000 for EDI-informed research supervised by a faculty member.


Don't Forget to Accept Your Scholarships

External awards application results will be released in the coming weeks. Please pay close attention to details on how to accept your award:

  • OGS:  If you are successful, and you originally completed a paper application submission, you need to fill in this acceptance form and return to jenna.mcconnell@carleton.ca as soon as possible. If you submitted your application online and received a successful result, the acceptance form will be located in your Carleton Central application. If you experience any issues accepting your award, please reach out to Jenna McConnell immediately. Note: If you have a pending decision from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR and have been successful in the OGS competition, please accept your OGS offer. If you then receive a positive result regarding a different external award, your funding will be revised.
  • CGS Master’s:  If you are successful, you need to fill out this acceptance form and send to jenna.mcconnell@carleton.ca as soon as possible.

Tri-council Doctoral Annual Progress Reports

Any student who holds a tri-council multi-year award at the doctoral level must fill out an annual progress report in order to receive the next three terms of their award. Reports should be submitted directly to jenna.mcconnell@carleton.ca for processing. The timing of the report is based on the start date of your award.

April 1 – May anniversaries
July 1 – September anniversaries
December 1 – January anniversaries

Share Your Accessibility Best Practices

The Coordinated Accessibility Strategy (CAS) is inviting you to share your accessibility best practices with the Carleton community. Adjusting the way we communicate and present information or approach daily tasks can profoundly improve the experience of those we work with and serve. To share your best practices, please send an email, photo, drawing or video that tells how you are addressing disability-related barriers and making your course(s), workplace or services more accessible for your peers, students, staff or visitors to AccessibilityStrategy@carleton.ca. Individual and group submissions are welcome. Submissions will be shared as part of a campaign that aims to illustrate Carleton’s strong culture of accessibility during National AccessAbility Week (May 30-June 3). The deadline to submit: is Friday, April 29, 2022.


Final Notice re. Feedback About the Revised Sexual Violence Policy

Carleton has published a draft version of the revised Sexual Violence Policy with tracked changes. As part of our commitment to providing a transparent process, we have posted a report outlining the feedback we received throughout the listening phase. Both documents are available on the consultation website. Students are encouraged to review the revised draft of the policy and provide additional feedback and comments by submitting feedback through the consultation website or by email at svpolicy@carleton.ca. Feedback on the revised draft of the policy will continue to be collected until Friday, April 8, 2022.


Reopening of O-Train Bridge to Two-Way Traffic

Facilities Management and Planning is pleased to announce that the newly designed and constructed bridge over the O-Train tracks, near parking lot 18, reopened to two-way traffic at noon on Tuesday, March 29. This means that those who park in Lot 6 and Lot 18 are now able to turn left towards Bronson Ave. The rejuvenation of the bridge, as well as the new roundabout, are part of the Carleton Transportation Plan to improve traffic flow on campus.

For International Students

As an international student enrolled in classes at Carleton, you must be covered under the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). If, however, you have OHIP, RAMQ (Quebec provincial insurance), other provincial coverage, or coverage with your Embassy, then UHIP is not required. If you have medical health coverage under one of those plans, please email proof along with your Carleton ID number to uhip@carleton.ca.

If you have been taking online classes from outside Canada this term you may be eligible for a UHIP refund. Complete our opt-out form and, upon approval, the fee will be removed and credited to your student account.

Research: Reducing Food Waste

Roughly 50 per cent of all food produced in Canada is thrown away before it reaches anyone’s plate. From the day a crop is planted, a myriad of problems can arise, including pests, mould and preparation waste. Reducing spoilage is one of the most effective things we can do to ensure access to healthy and affordable food, says Carleton Chemistry researcher Tyler Avis, director of Carleton’s Institute of Biochemistry and a founding faculty member in the university’s Food Science program.

New Research Suggests Link Between Contaminants and Diabetes

Right now, nearly one in three Canadians are living with diabetes or prediabetes, and the numbers are on the rise. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks and stroke, and health experts aren’t sure why incidence has been increasing so dramatically. Genetic risk factors play a role but don’t account for this alarming trend on their own, according to Carleton biology researcher Jenny Bruin, who believes that exposure to environmental contaminants is an important culprit.

Student-Designed App Offsets Carbon Emissions Based on Lifestyle

As COVID took hold across the world in the spring of 2020, images of once bustling cities began to circulate across traditional and social media. When fourth year Computer Science student Kashyap Achar and his friends looked at these pictures, they were struck by the lack of pollution in the images. That idea led to a social enterprise app that would offset carbon emissions, based on individual spending.

Carleton Partners with UBC to Help Afghan Scholars Find a New Intellectual Home in Canada

Researchers at Carleton and UBC are joining forces to help scholars and others who are fleeing the crisis in Afghanistan establish a new intellectual community in Canada. Their project, Placement, Preservation and Perseverance: Afghan At-Risk Scholars, Activists and Students has received a grant from the International Development Research Centre to support intellectuals who have been forced to flee Afghanistan, especially women and ethnic minorities.

Afghan Journalist Advocates for Her Country from Afar

Farida Nekzad was always committed to staying in her home country of Afghanistan. That was until last August when the city of Kabul fell to the Taliban. Relocated to Canada, she is now a journalist-in-residence with the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University.

Helping Resolve the Refugee Predicament

The plight of the world’s refugees is getting worse thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent tragedies in places like Ukraine and Afghanistan, says Carleton political science professor, James Milner, but solutions remain possible. Read More

Many of Milner’s graduate students are part of his research team that is based primarily in Canada, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon and Tanzania. They want to make sure that refugees’ voices are heard as the team tries to help find solutions with and for refugees. Read More

The School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies and ICGC is pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual SICS Research Symposium will take place virtually on Thursday April 7, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. Click here to register.

On April 8, 6 to 9 p.m., the Society for Neuroscience Ottawa Chapter is back for its annual Brain and Mental Health Art show in Support of the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre. Important Dates and Deadlines

April 1
Students who are graduating in Spring 2022 (June ceremonies) are required to complete the Graduation Application before the deadline of April 1, 2022.  You can find more information about how to apply by going to this website.

April 12

  • Last day to pay any remaining balance on your Student Account to avoid a hold on access to marks through Carleton Central and the release of transcripts and other official documents. An account balance may delay summer 2022 course selection.
  • Winter term ends.
  • Last day of winter term and fall/winter classes.
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from winter term and fall/winter courses.

April 15
Statutory holiday. University closed.

April 25
Summer term payment deadline. Visit the Student Accounts website for important payment information. Late payment charges and late registration charges apply to the student account on or after this date. OSAP entitlements must be available by this date in order to be eligible for the OSAP deferral. Calculate Amount to Pay will inform students if they have been granted this deferral.

May 5
Early summer and full summer classes begin.

May 12
Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) for early summer courses.

May 13
Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will not be eligible to graduate in spring 2022 and must register for the summer 2022 term.

May 19
Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) for full summer courses.

May 20
Last day to withdraw from early summer and full summer courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will result in a permanent notation of WDN on the official transcript.

May 23
Statutory holiday. University closed.

The summer 2022 class schedule is available in Carleton Central and via the public class schedule. Instructors were posted on March 14 and room information will be available on April 25. Registration information, including timetickets and important dates for the summer 2022 term, are posted at carleton.ca/registrar/registration
