Coming on Campus?

On the recommendation of Ottawa Public Health, Carleton will be maintaining its COVID-19 Mask Policy until further notice. Masks are required to be worn in all indoor university facilities including shared offices, meeting spaces, athletics facilities, classrooms and labs.


Join Us for GRADFLIX

Join us on Tuesday, May 31 (new date!) for the GRADflix 2022 showcase. All are welcome. GRADflix is a research video competition for graduate students. We have lots of great entries, and they are only one minute each! Get your popcorn ready and register here.


Convocation Update

This year, Convocation ceremonies will be held in person. Convocation for the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 will be held June 13-17. Convocation for the Class of 2022 will be held June 20-24. Check out our new Convocation website by clicking here.


Update Your Skills

Graduate Studies’s Professional Development team is offering some PD workshops this summer, including: June 10 at 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Managing the Writing Process

To view all of the summer PD offerings, please click here. Also, you can sign up for a one-on-one writing consultation to assist you with writing-related challenges, or to discuss the effectiveness of your research and writing strategies. To request a consultation, please fill out and submit this web form.

Meanwhile, the Paul Menton Centre (PMC) is offering weekly virtual writing support for graduate students with disabilities over the summer. The Graduate Student Writing Group provides grad students with a space for accountability for their writing projects and a chance to set writing goals for the session and for the upcoming week. The group meets every Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. until August 16. Please register for the Graduate Student Writing Group to receive a Zoom link for the weekly meetings. Before attending, you need to review the PMC group meeting guidelines. Registration with PMC is not essential for participation in this group.

STAR Symposium Climate Change & Health

In affiliation with the STAR (Stress Trauma and Resilience) working group, the CHAIM Centre is pleased to be hosting its inaugural live audience symposium tomorrow, May 27. Carleton Students Win Vector Awards for AI Research

Congratulations to the four Carleton grad students who have just received a Vector Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence. Awards are valued at $17,500 for one year of full-time study. The Committee received nominations from 14 universities and 48 programs across the province.

CIHR 2022 Info Session for Trainees in Health Research

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will be offering a series of MS Teams live events to trainees and institution staff regarding award programs they offer. They will provide an overview about relevant policies, tips for applicants, guidelines on how to submit an application, and other relevant information. AGE-WELL Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Awards in Technology and Aging provide funding to highly qualified master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral candidates and provide them with access to training and mentorship opportunities through the AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence. For International Students

I-Start Orientation is a free, online mini-course designed for new international students studying at Carleton University. Through this course, new students will learn the information needed to help you transition to student life at Carleton and in Canada.  Registration is now open with course launching on July 11. Register here.

Are you an international student and have OHIP provincial health insurance (green card)?  If so, then UHIP might not be required. Please email OHIP proof to uhip@carleton.ca for review and for termination of UHIP and refund/credit on your student account.

Selling the War: The Power of Russian Television

In the midst of a sitcom on Russian television, a short video will appear during the commercial break. That clip—along with a music video is among the many ways that Russian state media is broadcasting its narrative about the war in Ukraine. Paul Goode, the McMillan Chair of Russian Studies and Associate Professor in the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies at Carleton says: “There is a very clear relationship between Russian state television and the Kremlin, so this gives some insight into their thinking.”

Research: How Patients with Chronic Diseases Were Affected by Health Resources Diverted to COVID-19 Care

The multiple waves of COVID-19 have diverted considerable health-care resources away from patients who are dealing with chronic diseases since the spring of 2020. School of Public Policy & Administration Associate Professor Mehdi Ammi is the Nominated Principal Investigator of a two-year project that will try to pinpoint which multiple chronic conditions have been the most affected and at risk of long-term negative consequences because of the priority placed on COVID-19 care.

Research: Communicating Visual Information to the Vision Impaired

An estimated 1.5 million Canadians identify as having vision loss, according to the CNIB Foundation. Those affected still need to be able to use products such as documents, forms, books and messages in the course of their everyday lives. Sectors including banking, healthcare and all levels of government therefore need their products to be accessible to clients with visual impairment. Last year, Majid Komeili, assistant professor in Carleton’s School of Computer Science, was awarded an NSERC Alliance grant to work in collaboration with T-Base Communications to automate the conversion of graphics to an accessible format for blind people.

Student's Company Helps People Make and Fix Their Own Gear

In January 2022, Carleton commerce student Colin Bottomley launched ReFasten, which imports and distributes sustainably sourced products such as waterproof zippers and technical for either making or fixing gear. Now, with support from Carleton’s Innovation Hub, the 23-year-old entrepreneur is hoping not only to expand his business but also begin collaborating with university researchers to help develop more environmentally-friendly materials for the outdoor sector.

Important Dates and Deadlines

June 17

  • Last day of early summer classes. (NOTE: full summer classes resume July 4.)
  • Classes follow a Monday schedule.
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from early summer courses.
  • Last day for handing in term assignments, subject to any earlier course deadline.

June 18-19
No classes or examinations take place.

June 20-26
Early summer final examinations and full summer mid-term examinations may be held. Examinations are normally held all seven days of the week.

June 23
Financial holds preventing registration will be applied to accounts with an outstanding balance. In order to prevent delayed registration for fall and winter courses, ensure that Carleton has received payment for your outstanding balance prior to this date. Proof of payment will not be accepted.

July 1
Statutory holiday. University closed.

July 8-13
Carleton Central opens for registration for returning undergraduate students and new and returning graduate students (be sure to visit Step 1 of Registration in Carleton Central to view your registration start time).
