Congratulations Graduates

Congratulations to all students who graduated this fall. To celebrate your academic success, the University is hosting a virtual graduation celebration on Nov. 13, 2021, along with many faculty and departmental events to honour your important achievements. Graduation Story: Research Worth Its Weight in Gold

Brittany Astles has always been interested in water quality. No wonder, as she was from a small town in Northern Ontario where there have been multiple boil water advisories in many communities. So she chose to do her master’s research at Carleton on a specific project related to water quality. Astles graduated this fall with a Master’s degree in Geography with a Specialization in Data Science.

Inside Senate

The latest edition of Inside Senate is now available. Senate was pleased to approve the graduation of 1,370 students and 53 medals and prizes. Senate also confirmed that winter 2022 courses will be offered through a mix of face-to-face and online delivery to provide maximum flexibility for students, in line with the recommendations of the Carleton University Scenario Planning (CUSP) Working Group.


Carleton Celebrates 75 Years of Graduates

As Carleton University’s latest group of future alumni prepare to receive their degrees this November, they share the season with the celebration of another notable cohort: its first graduating class. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, marked the 75th anniversary of the very first degrees awarded by the school in 1946.

Students can get a flu shot on campus during the following two weeks (Mon. Nov. 1-5 and Nov. 8-12) from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Residence Commons Conference Room. First come, first serve.

Why not take a little time out from your fall break to acknowledge the amazing mentorship of your favourite professor by nominating him/her for a Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award? Nominations are open until Nov. 30. New this fall, professors who won mentoring awards seven or more years ago can now be re-nominated.

Award Deadlines Coming Up

Applications are still being accepted for these awards:

The MINDS Master’s Scholarships for Indigenous Students, valued at $17,500, are award supplements offered to successful Canada Graduate Scholarship—Masters (CGS M) applicants who self-identify as Indigenous and whose studies relate to defence and security. The deadline to apply is Dec. 1, 2021. More details are on our awards website.

Due to COVID, for the fall 2021 competitions, CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC will continue to accept unofficial transcripts if official transcripts cannot be obtained. Students are expected to make every effort to provide official documents and provide true, complete and accurate information. Tri-agencies and FGPA may request official hard copies at a later date.

Social Work is hosting an info session on Monday, Nov 15 from 5 to 7 p.m.  for students interested in applying for a PhD in Social Work. Registration info will be posted here in the near future.


Exemptions From International Tuition Fees

If you are an international student in the process of applying for Permanent Residence with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and have received documents from IRCC, you may be eligible to pay domestic rather than international tuition fees. The deadline to apply for the fall term is on or before Nov. 26.

Final Reminder - Update Zoom

Carleton Zoom users must, at minimum, be using version 5.5.0 as of Nov. 1 to ensure continued access to all Zoom meetings, including those within Brightspace. You can download the latest version of Zoom here.

Prof. Melanie Adrian Receives Prestigious Provincial Teaching Award

Carleton’s Melanie Adrian, professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies, has won a 2021 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Teaching Award. Presented annually to seven teachers and librarians from all levels of instruction, the OCUFA Teaching Award is the highest honour an educator can receive in the province.

Grad Student Presents Residential School Project at Heritage Saskatchewan Symposium

A symposium next month by Heritage Saskatchewan will feature a presentation by first-year Master of Architecture student Lauren Liebe. Liebe will present a collaborative project between the Muskowekwan First Nation and the 2019 third-year conservation studio, in which she took part. The studio produced nine design concepts to transform the former residential school at Muskowekwan First Nation into a training centre, museum, archive and memorial. It is the last intact former residential school in Saskatchewan and has since become a National Historic Site.

Be COVIDwise

Anyone coming on campus must complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you also need to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit this as soon as possible. You can find the form in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Until Oct. 29: Fall break. Classes are suspended.

Nov. 25:
Winter term payment deadline. Click here for important payment information. Late payment charges and late registration charges apply to the student account on or after this date. Payment is required to complete the registration process.

Dec. 1:

  • Last day for receipt of applications from potential winter (February) graduates.
  • Last day for graduate students to submit their supervisor-approved thesis in examinable form to their department.

Dec. 10:

  • Fall term financial holds preventing access to grades through Carleton Central and the release of documents will be applied to accounts with an outstanding balance.
  • Last day of fall term classes.
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from fall term courses (no financial adjustment

Dec. 24 through Jan. 4: The university will be closed for the holiday season and will re-open on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022.
