Tomorrow, Sept. 30, Carleton is commemorating Orange Shirt Day. This national day of remembrance is held annually to mark the devastating history and intergenerational impacts of residential and day schools and to honour their survivors. Carleton community members are encouraged to wear orange shirts to commemorate the day, attend the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Braiding Truth, Reconciliation and Rights from 10:30 a.m. to noon. and take time to meaningfully reflect on truth and conciliation in Canada – on Orange Shirt Day and beyond.

Stitching Together Grief and Art

When Deborah Young, a Cree social worker and Carleton University PhD candidate and lecturer, heard the horrific news about the recovery of graves at the former sites of residential schools in the spring of 2021, she knew she wanted to do something. 

“I was deeply moved, as many Canadians were moved, because of my own personal connection to the schools,” says Young, whose parents are residential school survivors. “I felt helpless and wanted to do something but didn’t know what it would be.”

Carleton PhD Student Wins Prestigious Fulbright Award

Sneha Sumanth has won a 2022-2023 Fulbright Student Award. A PhD student in Geography, this award has given Sumanth financial support to be able to live and study at the City University of New York (CUNY) for a nine-month academic year. Fulbright awards are given to students enrolled in a graduate program at a Canadian university that wish to conduct research in the United States that will support their Canadian degree.

Job Opportunity with EIC

The department of Equity and Inclusive Communities is hiring a graduate student to serve as an EDI Speaker Series Coordinator from October 2022 to June 2023. The Speaker Series Coordinator will organize and co-ordinate a year-long speaker series focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion. 16 hours per week, $30/hour.   • Donor-Funded Awards – The Fall 2022 competition is now open! Deadline to apply is September 30, 2022 (11:59PM EST).
  • Indigenous Graduate Student Award – Applications are now open! This award is available for Canadian First Nation, Metis or Inuit Master’s or Doctoral graduate students. Recipients will be selected based on demonstrated financial need and academic merit. Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation to verify ancestry. The application deadline is September 30, 2022 (11:59PM EST).
  • Canada Graduate Scholarships:
    Doctoral Program (CGSD)
     – Applications are now open! Students must apply via the appropriate agency portal. Full details can be found hereDeadlines: SSHRC PhD: September 30, 2022 11:59PM (EST); CIHR PhD: September 30, 2022 11:59PM (EST).
    Master’s Program (CGSM)

To apply you must be: a full-time Carleton University student during the terms in which you apply for and receive payments; actively working to launch or grow your company; committed to spend the Nicol funds to advance your company goals; and a resident of Ontario. Important Changes are Coming to Cmail on October 1

Microsoft is rolling out email security enhancements for all customers, including graduate students using Cmail, but you may need to switch email apps before October to keep accessing your inbox. Microsoft has introduced a new method of authentication called Modern Authentication and, on Oct. 1, 2022, apps that don’t support it will lose access to Cmail. If your email app doesn’t support Modern Authentication you will need to download the Microsoft Outlook app for all mobile, desktop and laptop devices, or switch to Outlook on the Web using a browser. Biology Butterfly Show Returns this Fall

Carleton faculty, staff, and students are invited to the 23rd annual Butterfly Show at the Nesbitt Greenhouse on Oct. 4 to 7 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and a special lunch hour on Oct. 6 from noon to 1 p.m. The show features approximately 1,000 exotic butterflies representing 41 different species from around the world amid lush plants in a tropical setting. Visitors in the greenhouse are limited to 30 people at one time, and the doors close promptly at 4 p.m. Come early and be aware that there could be a line-up! Click here for more details.

**Important Dates and Deadlines**

Sept. 30

  • Last day to withdraw from full fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to fall term fees and will result in a permanent notation of WDN appearing on your official transcript;
  • Last day to request Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for Oct./Nov. final examinations to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities. Note: it may not be possible to fulfil accommodation requests received after the specified deadlines.

Oct. 1
Last day for academic withdrawal from early fall courses.

Oct. 7
December examination schedule (fall term final and fall/winter mid-terms) available online.

Oct. 10
Statutory Holiday. University closed.

Oct. 14
Last day for summative tests or examinations, or formative tests or examinations totaling more than 15% of the final grade, in early fall term undergraduate courses, before the official Oct/Nov final examination period (see examination regulations in the Academic Regulations of the University section of the Undergraduate Calendar/General Regulations of the Graduate Calendar).

Oct. 15
Last day for receipt of applications for admission to an undergraduate degree program for the winter term from applicants whose documents originate from outside Canada or the United States.

Oct. 21
Last day of early fall classes.

Oct. 24
Deadline for course outlines to be made available to students registered in late fall courses.

Oct. 24-28
Fall break. Classes are suspended.

Oct. 29-30; Nov. 5-6
Final examinations in early fall undergraduate courses will be held.

Oct. 31
Late fall classes begin.
