GSA Health Plan, Welcome Weeks and Other News

All full-time students registered in the fall term are automatically covered by the Graduate Student Association’s medical, dental and accident insurance plan. If you want to opt out, you need to do so by Oct. 7. Welcome Weeks, sponsored by the GSA, continues until Sept. 18. And don’t forget to sign up for the GSA’s Grad Bulletin by going to gsacarleton.ca.

Deadlines for External & Special Awards

The application for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is now available online. The application form for the Rhodes Scholarship is available by clicking here and must be submitted by Sept. 15 to Andrew.Brook@carleton.ca. IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES

 ACADEMIC DEADLINES

September 7: Fall term begins today.

September 14: Deadline to apply for an opt-out for students who have not picked up their U-Pass. If you have already picked up your U-Pass, you may still submit the opt-out application and you will receive a pro-rated fee adjustment.

September 20: Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will not be eligible to graduate in Fall 2016 and must register for the fall 2016 term.

September 20: Last day of registration for fall term and fall/winter courses.

September 23-25: Summer deferred final examinations held.

September 30: Last day to withdraw from fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to Fall term fees.

October 7: Deadline to opt out of the GSA’s Health Plan.

October 7: December examination schedule (fall term final and fall/winter mid-terms) available online.

October 10: Statutory holiday. University closed.

October 24-28: Fall break. Classes are suspended

EVENTS/OTHER

Now until  September 18: GSA’s Welcome Weeks activities continue

September 8: Meet other grad students and service organization representatives at GSA’s Grad Fair from noon until 4 p.m. between the University Centre, Architecture and Canal Buildings. Rain date is Sept. 15. Free bike tune-ups and a vegan lunch provided by the Garden Spot (small donations are encouraged).

September 12-17: Throwback

October 15: Deadline to apply for funding to support a grad student-run conference on campus for this academic year

TRAINING & CAREER WORKSHOPS

Many Grad Navigate workshops are now available for the fall term. FGPA will continue to add new workshops over the next few weeks.

September 17: EDC’s TA Training Day

Check out EDC’s Preparing to Teach certificate program. Places are limited.

You can always access online training through MyGradSkills.ca. Please note that these online training modules workshops do not count towards paid training hours for TAs.

AWARDS & COMPETITION DEADLINES

CIHR is offering info sessions about CIHR award programs. Questions may be directed to CIHR via the webinar chat function. If you are interested in participating, please follow the relevant instructions:

September 9, 2016, Time: 1:30 pm, EST, Duration  2  hours

Mitacs offers several funding opportunities for graduate students. You can apply any time, except there are two deadline dates each year for the Mitacs Elevate program. Check out:
(a) Mitacs Accelerate (Funding starts at $15,000 for research internships with industry or non-profit partners)
(b) Mitacs Elevate ($57,500 annual grant for two-year postdoctoral fellowships with industry or non-profit partners).
(c) Mitacs Globalink Research (Travel funding for research projects with international universities)
(d) Mitacs Step (Professional development workshops facilitated by industry leaders

September 15: Carleton Deadline to Apply for a Rhodes Scholarship (applications to andrew.brook@carleton.ca)

September 30: Deadline to apply for an NSERC Doctoral award

October 1: Deadline to apply for a CIHR Doctoral award

October 14: Deadline to apply for a PhD SSHRC award

October 19: Deadline to apply for a Vanier Canada Graduate scholarship (PhDs only)

November 4 – Carleton U. Deadline to apply for a Trudeau Doctoral scholarship

November 15: Deadline to apply for a Fulbright scholarship

December 1: Deadline to apply for an OGS and Tri-council Master’s award

December 7: Deadline to apply for a Gates Cambridge scholarship

TA DEADLINES

The deadlines to apply for a Leave From Duties are:  Dec. 31 (winter term), April 30 (summer term)  (access form via Carleton Central) and Aug. 31 (fall term).

Deadline to apply to be an “out-of-priority” TA for the winter term is Jan. 1, 2017 and for the fall term 2017 is Sept. 1.

“Pedagogical” training hours must be submitted by Nov. 30 for a fall-only TAship and by March 30 for a full academic year TAship or a winter-only TAship.

TAs – Please note that it can take up to two weeks before your attendance at workshops is recorded. This is because this process is manual and time-consuming.  You are strongly encouraged to track your progress independently of the TA Management System in order to ensure its accuracy. In the event of a discrepancy, you are responsible for ensuring your training is captured in Carleton Central.
