The Graduate Students’ Association offers a medical, dental and accident insurance plan designed to be relatively comprehensive and low in cost. All full-time students registered in the fall term are automatically covered. Part-time students and dependents can join the plan for a fee. Deadlines apply.  More

Deadline – Apply Online to Graduate at Fall Convocation

You need to apply online for fall (November) 2016 graduation by Sept. 1.  The form is in Carleton Central under the section entitled  “Student Online Applications”.

Important Dates and Deadlines


August 25  Fall payment deadline. Click here for important payment information. Late charges may be applied to the student account any time after this date.

September 1 – Last day for receipt of applications from potential fall (November) graduates.

September 5 Statutory holiday. University closed

September 7 – Fall term begins

September 14 – Deadline to apply for an opt-out for students who have not picked up their U-Pass. If you have already picked up your U-Pass, you may still submit the opt-out application and you will receive a pro-rated fee adjustment

September 20 Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will not be eligible to graduate in Fall 2016 and must register for the fall 2016 term.

September 20 – Last day of registration for fall term and fall/winter courses.

September 23-25 – Summer deferred final examinations held.

September 30 – Last day to withdraw from fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to Fall term fees.

October 7 Deadline to opt out of the GSA’s Health Plan.

Some Grad Navigate workshops are now available for the fall term. FGPA will continue to add new workshops over the next month.

TAs, check out the EDC’s Training Day on Sept. 17, as well as the Preparing to Teach Certificate program.

You can always access online training through Please note that these online training modules workshops do not count towards paid training hours for TAs.


CIHR is offering info sessions about CIHR award programs. Questions may be directed to CIHR via the webinar chat function. If you are interested in participating, please follow the relevant instructions:

Mitacs offers several funding opportunities for graduate students. You can apply any time, except there are two deadline dates each year for the Mitacs Elevate program. Check out:
(a) Mitacs Accelerate (Funding starts at $15,000 for research internships with industry or non-profit partners)
(b) Mitacs Elevate ($57,500 annual grant for two-year postdoctoral fellowships with industry or non-profit partners).
(c) Mitacs Globalink Research (Travel funding for research projects with international universities)
(d) Mitacs Step (Professional development workshops facilitated by industry leaders

The deadlines to apply for a Leave From Duties are:  Aug. 31 (fall term), Dec. 31 (winter term) and April 30 (summer term)  (access form via Carleton Central)

Deadline to apply to be an “out-of-priority” TA for the fall term is Sept. 1 and for the winter term is Jan. 1, 2017.

“Pedagogical” training hours must be submitted by Nov. 30 for a fall-only TAship and by March 30 for a full academic year TAship or a winter-only TAship.

TAs – Please note that it can take up to two weeks before your attendance at workshops is recorded and you are credited with your paid training hours. This is because this process is manual and time-consuming.  You are strongly encouraged to track your progress independently of the TA Management System in order to ensure its accuracy. In the event of a discrepancy, you are responsible for ensuring your training is captured in Carleton Central.
