Final Reminder to Fill in the CGPSS Survey

On Jan. 25, you received an email inviting you to participate in the 2022 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS). The deadline to fill in this online survey is Sunday, Feb. 13.  For each week of the survey, three grad students who fill in the survey are being randomly selected to win a $100 prize. 3MT and GRADflix

The Graduate Studies is running two research communication contests for graduate students this year: the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and GRADflix. As a bonus, you may be able to win some money. If you are interested in competing in either contest, please click here.


Carleton Re-Opens

On Monday, Feb. 7, Carleton re-opened its facilities and resumed in-person courses (as per the winter 2022 schedule). In case you missed it, here is the email that was sent to all graduate students on Feb. 2.

Graduate Studies has also re-opened for in-person student services from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one hour closure from noon to 1:00 p.m.

A reminder to anyone now coming on campus to complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you also need to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit this as soon as possible. You can find the form in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Access to the tunnel system at Carleton University remains restricted to authorized individuals and those with approval to use the tunnels for accessibility purposes.

Black History Month Continues

February is Black History Month. Throughout the month, visit the Black History Month web page as the Carleton community mobilizes to celebrate and highlight Black leadership, achievements and experiences. Read about amazing alumni like Nadia Theodore, And you can also read about Arielle Kayabaga, a student in Carleton’s Master of Political Management program, who was elected as the Member of Parliament for London West in 2021.


Celebrating Convocation with our 2020, 2021 and 2022 Graduates 

Carleton is planning to host in-person Convocation ceremonies for our graduates in June, subject to public health guidelines. We look forward to giving the graduating classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 the well-deserved opportunity to cross the stage to the cheers of their loved ones.

Two Groups for Students With Disabilities

The Paul Menton Centre (PMC) is hosting two weekly virtual graduate student groups that will run for the next nine weeks. Please review the PMC group meeting guidelines before attending.

The Graduate Student Support Group: every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. During these sessions, graduate students share their experiences, offer each other advice, and the PMC will provide relevant resources and strategies. Please register for the Graduate Student Support Group to receive the Zoom link for the weekly meetings.

The Graduate Student Writing Group: every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This group provides graduate students a space for accountability for their writing projects and a chance for graduate students to set tangible writing goals for the session and for the upcoming week. Please register for the Graduate Student Writing Group to receive the Zoom link for the weekly meetings.


More Opportunities to Present Your Research

The Organizing Committee of the 2nd Annual School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies Research Symposium is pleased to announce its 2022 Call for Papers. This is an opportunity to present new and ongoing research, gain conference experience, and connect with faculty and peers. The Symposium will take place virtually on Thursday April 7 but you need to submit your abstract by Sunday Feb. 20 at 11:59 p.m. Click here for details.

Apply by Feb. 28 to present your research at the Centre for Research on Inclusion at Work’s virtual multidisciplinary conference. CRIW seeks submissions from graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty early in their careers or new to research on equity, diversity and inclusion. Of particular interest are papers exploring barriers to employment and organizational socialization for such populations as Black, Indigenous and people of colour, immigrants, women, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ2+ and youth. Apply Now for the Indigenous Graduate Student Award 

The Indigenous Graduate Student Award is awarded by the Dean of the Graduate Studies to Canadian First Nation, Metis or Inuit Master’s or Doctoral graduate students. Recipients will be selected based on demonstrated financial need and academic merit. Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation to verify ancestry. This “proof of ancestry” documentation should be uploaded in their application as a supporting letter. Applicants need to go to Carleton Central (under “financial aid and awards” and then “online graduate award applications”) and search under the correct name. Deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2022. Note: Recipients from the Fall 2021 award competition are not eligible for the Winter 2022 awards.


RIC Engaged Scholarship Award for Graduate Students

Research Impact Canada, a network of research institutions dedicated to maximizing the impact of research in society, has launched the 2021-22 edition of the RIC Engaged Scholarship Award for Graduate Students. Award recipients will earn a cash prize of $2000 (for MA students and recent MA graduates) or $3000 (for PhD students and recent PhD grads), in addition to several opportunities to share their engaged research projects. For further information, see this web page and the Call for applications. Questions can be directed to Félix Desmeules-Trudel or info@researchimpact.ca.  Deadline for applications is by Feb. 28 at 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time). Applications should be submitted online at forms.researchimpact.ca.


Applications Are Open for These Fellowships

The Hugh C. Morris Experiential Learning Fellowship is valued at up to $40,000 and is open to any graduate student studying in Canada who is working in a field related to earth, geosciences, environment, alternative energy, water, climate change, sustainability, or to the social impact, social sciences or design sciences related to these areas. It is designed to provide a unique experiential travel program designed by the student. Fellowship application forms are available on the Kimberley Foundation website. The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. PST on Feb. 15, 2022.

The Canadian Science Policy Fellowship is accepting applications from prospective fellows interested in undertaking a year-long policy position with a Canadian government host office beginning in Sept. 2022. Note that past and current participants in the program are not eligible. Applications will be accepted until Monday, Feb. 21, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. Click here for details.

Carleton University is accepting applications to the R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship for a project to be completed in 2022. The application deadline is Monday, March 7, 2022 at 12 p.m. (noon) EST.

Carleton Recreation and Athletics is now offering new Women’s Only Fitness Centre and Trans & Allies Fitness Space booking options to our community. For International Students

International students experiencing financial hardship are eligible to apply to the International Student Relief Fund. The Fund is designed to provide emergency financial assistance to Carleton international students in Canada experiencing short term hardship who are not eligible for federal pandemic financial support. The funding is meant to cover an unforeseeable financial crisis and does not cover expenses relating to travel, rent, student fees, debts, anticipated future financial hardship, or costs that are related to being an academic student. Grad Research: PhD Student Studies Impact of a Powerful Pollutant on Human Health

Noa Gang a PhD candidate in Biology, is examining the impact of man-made environmental toxins on beta cells in the pancreas. Gang works in Jenny Bruin’s Diabetes and Toxicology lab where a team is looking at the impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on human health.

March 1:  Last day for graduate students to submit their supervisor-approved thesis, in examinable form to their supervisor.
