Winter Term Classes
Following discussions with public health authorities, the Council of Ontario Universities, and other institutions in the province, Carleton is holding the first three weeks of the winter 2022 courses fully online. We are continuing to monitor the rapidly evolving situation and will provide further updates in January.

Summer 2022 Course Offerings
The Summer 2022 class schedule is now available in Carleton Central and via the public class schedule. At this time, only information about course offerings is available. Instructors will be posted on March 14, 2022 and room information will be available on April 25, 2022. Registration information, including timetickets and important dates for the Summer 2022 term, will be posted at carleton.ca/registrar/registration today, Jan. 7, 2022.

For International Students
The International Student Services Office (ISSO) invites new students to join I-Start, its free and fun virtual orientation for international students. You’ll receive resources and information through self-paced sessions designed to help you transition successfully to student life at Carleton and in Canada.
Global Ravens Connect is a virtual event where you can meet other international students in your same year of study. Join the ISSO from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 15 for socializing, games, and prizes! Click here for details.

2022 Grad Student Satisfaction Survey
Carleton University will be participating in the 2022 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS) along with all other Ontario universities that have graduate programs. In late January, you will receive an individual email inviting you to participate in this online survey, which will be open for three weeks. For each week of the survey, three grad students who fill in the survey will be randomly selected to win a $100 cash prize. Find out why it’s important for you to participate.

U-Pass Opt-Out Deadline is Approaching
The deadline to apply to receive a full refund when opting out of the U-Pass for the winter term is Jan. 14. If you are studying exclusively online, you are eligible to opt out from the U-Pass program. However, you still need to apply to opt out. Click here for the opt-out process. Still Time To Tell Your SSHRC Research Story
A reminder that the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is again sponsoring its annual Storyteller Competition. This competition challenges postsecondary students to show Canadians, in up to three minutes or 300 words, how social sciences and humanities research affects our lives, our world and our future for the better. The Top 25 finalists win $3,000. The deadline to apply is on Jan. 24, 2022. Click here for more information.

Scholarship Balance
If you are eligible to receive a scholarship balance, you can request your balance through Carleton Central by clicking on “Refund or Scholarship Balance Request”. Depending on the amount of your scholarship balance, you will have up to four options: campus card transfer, e-transfer, cheque, or donate to Carleton. Although you can submit your request prior to the financial drop date, it will not be processed until after Jan. 31, 2022. Sexual Violence Policy Review Information and Feedback Sessions for Grad Students and TAs
Carleton University is reviewing its Sexual Violence Policy throughout the 2021-2022 academic year. As part of this process, we have committed to offering information and feedback sessions to solicit feedback from the campus community. The objective of these sessions is to host a supportive, creative space wherein members of the community can provide their feedback on the Sexual Violence Policy. Interested in becoming a Student Governor?
The Carleton University Board of Governors is seeking Expressions of Interest from graduate and undergrad students to serve a one-year term for the 2022-23 Board year. Interested students must attend a virtual Board 101 information session on Jan. 18 or Jan. 20 from 12 – 1 p.m.

Carleton University and CAE Strike High-Tech Research Partnership
Carleton University has teamed up with the high-tech company CAE to establish a research partnership that will advance innovation, talent development and Work-Integrated Learning in simulation and immersive environments. Their focus is on advancing health technology, as well as other areas of common interest in science and engineering. Information Technology, Computer Science, Biomedical and Engineering students will be able to access co-op placements and internships at CAE, where they will work on real-world applications for a broad variety of advanced technologies.

Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub Research to Support Enterprises and Communities
On Dec. 13, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development Mary Ng announced that the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub at Carleton will receive a grant of $5-million over four years from ISED Canada. In partnership with the Dream Legacy Foundation, the hub will be a national data and knowledge platform focusing on the state of Black entrepreneurship in Canada. Read the full story here.

Inventing the Technology to Bring Reliable Internet to Remote Regions in Canada
In 2018, the Government of Canada tasked the National Research Council of Canada to develop new technologies to improve broadband connectivity in rural and remote communities across Canada. From this directive, the Optical SATCOM Consortium was formed. Carleton University is one of the six founding Tier 1 members.

New Music and Sound Research Centre Takes Community-Centred Approach
Music, Sound and Society in Canada is a new Research Centre in Carleton’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences that will take a critical lens to music and sound in this country. It formally launched on Nov. 30, 2021 and will explore how music is both shaped by and helps to shape, Canadian society.

PhD Student Wins Study Trip to Brussels
PhD student Alexandra Chronopoulos of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs is one of the winners of the Schuman Challenge essay prize, organized by the European Union Delegation to Canada. She won a one-week study trip to Brussels, Belgium this spring (Covid permitting) where she will be able to witness the internal workings of the EU Parliament and get to meet with various policymakers and Eurocrats.

If You Have to Come on Campus
Please be reminded that access to the tunnel system at Carleton University remains restricted to authorized individuals and those with approval to use the tunnels for accessibility purposes.
Anyone coming on campus must complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you also need to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit this as soon as possible. You can find the form in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Any university staff, faculty, or researchers who have cause to access federal government workplaces as a result of a grant or contract held by Carleton, where they may come into contact with public servants, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This is a mandatory federal government requirement.

Important Dates and Deadlines
The University reopened on Jan. 5, 2022 at 8:30 a.m. However most offices will operate virtually until further advised due to COVID restrictions.
Jan. 10, 2022: Winter term classes begin.
Jan. 24, 2022:
- Last day for registration for winter term courses.
- Last day to change courses or sections (including auditing) for winter term courses.
- Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Graduate Studies will not be eligible to graduate in winter 2022 and must register for the winter 2022 term.
