Grad Student Film Premiere: Improvising a Dissertation
Last summer, six singer-researchers performed in a variety of settings in and around Ottawa while exploring different environments through collaborative vocal improvisations. The result? A film called The Singing Field: A Performance of Environmental Vocal Exploration, which is part of Nicola Oddy’s PhD dissertation. You are invited to view the premiere of this film on February 28 at 7:30 p.m. EST.

When Will I Find Out if I have Won an Award?
Graduate students will be informed of their scholarship status by the following:
- OGS: Beginning of March
- NSERC PhD: End of March
- SSHRC PhD: End of April
- CIHR PhD: End of April
- CGS Master’s (all): April 1 through the portal

Thesis Deadline Extended
The date for Graduate students to electronically submit their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs has been extended to May 31. If you have not done so by this date, you will not be eligible to graduate in June 2021 and must register for the Summer 2021 term. All thesis grades need to have been submitted by that time.

Event Reminders

Registration is open for the second annual Kinàmàgawin Symposium, which will be streamed online on Thursday, February 25. The day-long symposium is open for the community to attend any portion of the event, which includes keynote speakers, panel discussions and Inuit cultural performances—all focused on this year’s theme: The Inuit Relocations: Intergenerational Impacts and Inuit Resilience.
Carleton’s Afro Caribbean Mentorship Program and the Nigerian Canadian Association, based in Montreal, will host their third annual, one-day, online Black History Month event at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 27. Sponsored by the Royal Bank of Canada, the evening’s festivities will celebrate Afro-Caribbean Black Canadian communities, by paying homage to their history and celebrating the great accomplishments of Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) people. Six graduate students from the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism have received a 2021 Azrieli Mini-Thesis Award. The award is bestowed annually to students who demonstrate excellence in their thesis research and design work.

Celebrating Black History Month: The Dualities of Nduka Otiono
Helping Refugees to Feel at Home in Canada
Meet Prof. Nimo Bokore from the School of Social Work. She is a refugee mother who survived seven months of political imprisonment and torture in her birthplace, Ethiopia. After she was forced to leave home with her four young children, they survived refugee camp life in Africa and Europe. They then came to Canada through one of Canada’s humanitarian refugee resettlement programs.

Striving for Gender Equity
Rowan Thomson, whose award-winning research involves developing and applying computational techniques to improve radiotherapy cancer treatments, is an anomaly in her field. She’s a woman. Although significant progress has been made toward gender balance in some sciences, equality remains elusive in historically male disciplines such as math, physics and computer science. Last summer, Thomson took on a new role at Carleton: assistant dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Faculty of Science. The position is part of a growing effort at the university to ensure that everybody has the freedom to contribute to their chosen field.

Brightening Care Facilities With Cards
Last spring, Carleton University student Marissa Parker saw handwritten cards as a way to help reduce feelings of loneliness among seniors living in care facilities. In August, she launched a non-profit that collects cards from people around the world and distributes them to Canadian care facilities.

NSERC Alliance Grants Support Research Strengths at Carleton University
Carleton University has received almost $1 million in funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s (NSERC) Alliance Grants. The funds support research in several areas of strength at Carleton such as sustainability and climate change, accessibility and information communications technology.
