Two Carleton PhD Students Win Coveted Vanier 2022 Awards
On Nov. 28, 2022, Carleton University was the host site for the federal government’s announcement of the winners for the 2021-2022 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships.
Parliamentary Secretary Adam van Koeverden, on behalf of Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, recognized the more than 200 young researchers across Canada who have received these prestigious awards.
Carleton PhD students Alicia McVarnock (Developmental Psychology) and Chikezirim Nwoke (Anthropology) have both been awarded a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship valued at $50,000 per year for three years during a student’s doctoral studies. The coveted Vanier scholarships are awarded to Canadian PhD students who conduct exceptional research.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
Every year from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, people all over the world observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. During these 16 days, Carleton will share a variety of resources, information, stories and videos to help grow awareness about this issue and encourage everyday activism and commitment to ending gender-based violence. National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
On Dec. 6, 2022, the Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) invites the Carleton community to join us in observing Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women–established in commemoration of the 1989 killing of 14 women at École Polytechnique.
As part of this year’s commemorative event, FED will be introducing an honorary plaque in Carleton’s new Engineering Design Centre (EDC), in memory of these 14 women and to re-affirm our commitment to eliminating all forms of gender-based violence in our community.

TA Central Hub: TA Grading Drop-In Sessions - December 6 and 8
Apply to Teach an EMCP Course - Deadline is Tomorrow!
The Enrichment Mini-Courses Program (EMCP) provides high achieving students from grades 8 to 11 with the chance to experience Carleton University for a one-week enriched learning experience.
The Undergraduate Recruitment Office is currently looking for enthusiastic faculty and graduate students who are interested in teaching an EMCP course to a group of bright young students during the first week of May 2023. Learn more about the roles and responsibilities of an EMCP Course Instructor.
Submit an EMCP course proposal on a subject you are passionate about teaching! Deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.

Holiday Lights Across Canada
Join the International Student Services Office (ISSO) on Thursday. Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. for a colourful evening of festive lights in Canada’s capital! ISSO volunteers will walk part of Ottawa’s official festive lighting route and then watch the winter lightscapes multimedia show at Parliament Hill. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly for the walk and bring their U-PASS for using the OC Transpo. For more details, click here.

Graduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation Opens Career Doors
The eight-month Graduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation prepares students for a career in the growing field of conservation in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. The program is a good fit for people with backgrounds in history, engineering, urban studies, architecture, planning, landscape, and trades. Students acquire the knowledge and skills to assess and document heritage sites and make decisions regarding architectural conservation. Application deadline is Feb. 1, 2023.

Ottawa’s largest pop up holiday market returns to the Fieldhouse at Carleton on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Browse through 200 vendor booths for bespoke, handcrafted and diverse items ranging from Christmas decor to art, jewelry, artisan foods, self-care products, accessories, home goods and more. Tri-Agency Doctoral Award Annual Progress Report
Any PhD student who holds a tri-council multi-year award must fill out an annual progress report in order to receive the next three terms of their award. Reports should be submitted directly to jenna.mcconnell@carleton.ca for processing. The timing of the report is based on the start date of your award.
April 1 – May anniversaries
July 1 – September anniversaries
Dec. 1 – January anniversaries

**Important Dates and Deadlines**
Dec. 1
- Last day for receipt of applications from potential winter (February) graduates.
- Last day for graduate students to submit their supervisor-approved thesis in examinable form to the department.
Dec. 2
Last day for summative tests or examinations or formative tests or examinations totaling more than 15% of the final grade in the late fall before the official examination period (see examinations regulations in the Academic Regulations of the University section of the Undergraduate Calendar/General Regulations of the Graduate Calendar).
Dec. 9
- Fall term ends.
- Last day of full fall and late fall term classes.
- Classes follow a Monday schedule (full fall and fall/winter term courses only).
- Last day for handing in term work and the last day that can be specified by a course instructor as a due date for term work for fall term courses.
- Last day for take home examinations to be assigned, with the exception of anyone conforming to the Undergraduate Examination Regulations (section 4.1 of the Academic Regulations of the University section of the Undergraduate Calendar or the General Regulations in the Graduate Calendar (section 9).
- Last day to pay any remaining fall tuition fees to avoid a hold on access to marks through Carleton Central and the release of transcripts and other official documents.
Dec. 10-22
Final examinations in full fall and late fall term courses and mid-term examinations in fall/winter courses will be held. Examinations are normally held all seven days of the week.
Dec. 22
All take home examinations are due on this day, with the exception of those conforming to the examinations regulations in the Academic Regulations of the University section of the Undergraduate Calendar/General Regulations of the Graduate Calendar.
Dec. 25, 2022 to Jan. 3, 2023
University closed.
