Winter and Summer Courses

A reminder that Carleton and other Ontario universities are holding the first three weeks of the winter 2022 courses (until at least January 31) fully online. We are continuing to monitor the rapidly evolving situation and will provide further updates in January.

The summer 2022 class schedule is now available in Carleton Central and via the public class schedule. At this time, only information about course offerings is available. Instructors will be posted on March 14 and room information will be available on April 25. Registration information, including timetickets and important dates for the summer 2022 term, are posted at carleton.ca/registrar/registration.

For International Students

The International Student Services Office (ISSO) invites new students to join I-Start, its free and fun virtual orientation for international students. You’ll receive resources and information through self-paced sessions designed to help you transition successfully to student life at Carleton and in Canada.

Global Ravens Connect is a virtual event where you can meet other international students in your same year of study. Join the ISSO from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 15 for socializing, games, and prizes! Click here for details.

The ISSO can also answer questions about study permits, travel and quarantine plans, or health insurance, and more. isso@carleton.ca


U-Pass Opt-Out Deadline is Tomorrow

The deadline to apply to receive a full refund when opting out of the U-Pass for the winter term is Jan. 14. If you are studying exclusively online, you are eligible to opt out from the U-Pass program. However, you still need to apply to opt out. Click here for the opt-out process.

Coming Soon - Grad Student Survey

Carleton University will be participating in the 2022 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS) along with all other Ontario universities that have graduate programs. In late January, you will receive an individual email inviting you to participate in this online survey, which will be open for three weeks. For each week of the survey, three grad students who fill in the survey will be randomly selected to win a $100 prize. Find out why it’s important for you to participate.

Are You Involved in SSHRC-funded Research?

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is again sponsoring its annual Storyteller Competition. This competition challenges postsecondary students to show Canadians, in up to three minutes or 300 words, how social sciences and humanities research affects our lives, our world and our future for the better. The Top 25 finalists win $3,000. The deadline to apply is on Jan. 24, 2022. Click here for more information.

Carleton's New Brand Video

As part of Carleton’s ongoing Reputation Enhancement Project, the Department of University Communications is pleased to present a new 90 second brand video. Based on our CHALLENGE campaign platform, the video features many Carleton students, faculty and staff, and is voiced by our very own Prof. Nana aba Duncan.  View the video.


Scholarship Balance

If you are eligible to receive a scholarship balance, you can request your balance through Carleton Central by clicking on “Refund or Scholarship Balance Request”. Depending on the amount of your scholarship balance, you will have up to four options: campus card transfer, e-transfer, cheque, or donate to Carleton. Although you can submit your request prior to the financial drop date, it will not be processed until after Jan. 31, 2022. VPRI Advisory Committee Call for Student Nominations

Carleton is seeking nominations for one graduate student and one undergraduate student to serve on the advisory committee for the Vice-President, Research and International (VPRI) review. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Jan. 18. Apply here


Sexual Violence Policy Review Information and Feedback Sessions for Grad Students and TAs

Carleton University is reviewing its Sexual Violence Policy throughout the 2021-2022 academic year. As part of this process, we have committed to offering information and feedback sessions to solicit feedback from the campus community. The objective of these sessions is to host a supportive, creative space wherein members of the community can provide their feedback on the Sexual Violence Policy. Register now for the upcoming information and feedback sessions for graduate students and teaching assistants.


Interested in Becoming a Student Governor?

The Carleton University Board of Governors is seeking Expressions of Interest from graduate and undergrad students to serve a one-year term for the 2022-23 Board year. Interested students must attend a virtual Board 101 information session on Jan. 18 or Jan. 20 from 12 – 1 p.m.

The application deadline for submitting Expressions of Interests is Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. For eligibility criteria and additional information, visit: carleton.ca/student-governors


Policy Updates

The Senior Management Committee has reviewed and approved the following policies: Bicycle, E-Bikes, Rollerblade, Scooter and Skateboard Policy; Alcohol and Cannabis Use Policy; Environmental Health and Safety Policy and guidelines; Workplace Violence Prevention Policy; Workplace Harassment Prevention Policy; and Information Technology Security Policy. Web versions of all policies are available on the University Secretariat website.


Carleton Ranks 2nd in Canada in World Sustainability Rankings

The results of the UI Green Metric World University Ranking 2021 were announced in December. Carleton was pleased to be ranked 2nd in Canada and 39th overall. 956 universities from over 90 different countries took part. The rankings look at a number of indicators including infrastructure, energy, climate change and education. While Carleton continues to strive for sustainability and to ensure the implementation of our key strategic plans, this provides a good signpost of the progress on our long journey towards zero carbon.

Green Economy Webinar - Career Exploration and Sustainability 

Sustainability Carleton and Relay Education are pleased to host a webinar on the Green Economy. This presentation will highlight the many sectors and industries that will see growth during the low carbon transition of the economy. A number of companies and start-ups will be discussed, showcasing the various climate, low/zero carbon, sustainability, and environmental stewardship goals that their services and products address. A highlight is placed on Canadian companies and organizations throughout the presentation. The goal will be for you to take away more information about how to access roles in this sector and what companies are looking for. Measuring Methane Emissions One of the Keys to Combatting Climate Change

Carleton Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Prof. Matthew Johnson, director of the university’s Energy and Emissions Research Laboratory, is in the midst of a multi-year project using airborne and ground-based technologies to measure methane at more than 8,000 active energy production sites from Manitoba to British Columbia.

If You Have to Come on Campus

Please be reminded that access to the tunnel system at Carleton University remains restricted to authorized individuals and those with approval to use the tunnels for accessibility purposes.

Anyone coming on campus must complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you also need to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit this as soon as possible. You can find the form in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Several of Graduate Studies’s FAQs for current grad students have been updated to reflect the new term.

Any university staff, faculty, or researchers who have cause to access federal government workplaces as a result of a grant or contract held by Carleton, where they may come into contact with public servants, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This is a mandatory federal government requirement.


Important Dates and Deadlines

Although the University has reopened for the winter term, most offices will operate virtually until further advised due to COVID restrictions. At this time, all classes are being held virtually.

Jan. 24, 2022:

  • Last day for registration for winter term courses.
  • Last day to change courses or sections (including auditing) for winter term courses.
  • Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Graduate Studies will not be eligible to graduate in winter 2022 and must register for the winter 2022 term.

Jan. 21-23 and 28-30:

  • Fall term deferred examinations will be held.

Jan. 31:

  • Last day for a fee adjustment when withdrawing from winter term courses or the winter portion of two-term courses (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to winter term fees and will result in a permanent notation of WDN appearing on your official transcript.
