Winter and Summer Courses

Carleton and other Ontario universities are holding the first weeks of the winter 2022 courses fully online. As our President notes in this message, barring another dramatic change in the trajectory of the pandemic, we will re-open our facilities (following public health regulations) and resume our in-person courses (as per the winter 2022 schedule) and activities on Monday, Feb. 7, 2022.

The summer 2022 class schedule is now available in Carleton Central and via the public class schedule. At this time, only information about course offerings is available. Instructors will be posted on March 14 and room information will be available on April 25. Registration information, including timetickets and important dates for the summer 2022 term, are posted at carleton.ca/registrar/registration.

Coming Soon - The 2022 Canadian Grad & Professional Student Survey

Carleton University will be participating in the 2022 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS) along with all other Ontario universities that have graduate programs. On Jan. 25, you will receive an email inviting you to participate in this online survey, which will be open for three weeks. For each week of the survey, three grad students who fill in the survey will be randomly selected to win a $100 prize.

Final Reminder for the SSHRC Storyteller Competition

There is now less than a week to enter the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s annual Storyteller Competition. The Top 25 finalists win $3,000. The deadline to apply is on Jan. 24, 2022. Click here for more information.


They're Back - The 3MT and GRADflix

This year, the Graduate Studies is running two separate research communication contests for graduate students: the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and GRADflix competitions. It’s time to go public with your ideas! As a bonus, you may be able to win some money. If you are currently in Canada and have active University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) coverage, you should have received your UHIP card via email from Sun Life Insurance. Be sure to check your spam and junk email folders. You can also register online on this web page to print your card, track your claims, and more. Let's Talk

The Department of Psychology is pleased to present the third annual Psychology Let’s Talk Lecture on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 2:30 p.m. over Zoom. The topic of this lecture will be Identifying the Gaps in Efforts to End Mental Health Stigma by Tina Montreuil of McGill University. Registration is available online, by clicking here.


Doctor's Notes & Medical Certificates Suspended

A reminder that Carleton has suspended the need for a doctor’s note or medical certificate for academic accommodation requests for the winter 2022 term. Students can complete this self-declaration form available on the Registrar’s Office website to request academic accommodation for missed course work including exams and assignments. Students are encouraged to connect directly with their instructors to discuss required accommodations arising from the COVID-19 situation.


Student Leadership Conference Coming Up this Saturday

The 8th annual SOAR Student Leadership Conference will be taking place on Saturday, Jan. 22. This one-day conference at Carleton includes keynote speaker Andre De Grasse who made history at the 2016 Rio Olympics when he became the first Canadian to win Olympic medals in all three sprint events. This year’s programming will be held virtually with influential presentations and interactive opportunities to help students grow their leadership skills. Service Excellence Award Nominations – Deadline is Tomorrow

Do you know a faculty or staff member who provides awesome service or has taken an innovative approach to teaching? Nominate them for a Service Excellence Award! Please note that nominations are accepted for faculty and staff only but students can submit nominations. The deadline is Jan. 21 to submit a Service Excellence nomination in one of the three categories – Innovation, Team and Individual. Submit your nominations today at this website. Writing for "The Conversation"

Are you interested in sharing your research with the wider public? Or want to learn how to write an opinion piece to impart ideas? The Department of University Communications invites PhD candidates and faculty to attend a virtual workshop about writing for The Conversation on Jan. 31 or Feb. 7. (A two-day science-specific session is scheduled for Jan. 24 and. 25)

The Conversation is a unique digital journalism platform designed to boost the visibility of Canada’s academic faculty and researchers. Click here to register.

Call for Papers - School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies Research Symposium

The Organizing Committee of the 2nd Annual School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies Research Symposium is pleased to announce its 2022 Call for Papers. This is an opportunity to present new and ongoing research, gain conference experience, and connect with faculty and peers. The Symposium will take place virtually on Thursday April 7 but you need to submit your abstract by Sunday Feb. 20 at 11:59 p.m.

Applications Are Open for the Hugh C. Morris Experiential Learning Fellowship

The Hugh C. Morris Experiential Learning Fellowship is valued at up to $40,000 and is open to any graduate student studying in Canada who is working in a field related to earth, geosciences, environment, alternative energy, water, climate change, sustainability, or to the social impact, social sciences or design sciences related to these areas. It is designed to provide a unique experiential travel program designed by the student. Fellowship application forms are available on the Kimberley Foundation website. The deadline for receipt of online applications is 11:59 p.m. PST on Feb. 15, 2022.


Sexual Violence Policy Review Information and Feedback Sessions for Grad Students and TAs

Carleton is reviewing its Sexual Violence Policy. As part of this process, we are offering information and feedback sessions to solicit feedback from the campus community. The objective of these sessions is to host a supportive, creative space wherein members of the community can provide their feedback on the Sexual Violence Policy. Calling all Students: Strategic Plan for Community Engagement Student Consultation

Green Economy Webinar - Register Now

Sustainability Carleton and Relay Education are hosting a webinar on the Green Economy that will highlight the many sectors and industries that will see growth during the low carbon transition of the economy. A number of companies and start-ups will be discussed, showcasing the various climate, low/zero carbon, sustainability, and environmental stewardship goals that their services and products address. Seven Carleton Community Members Appointed to the Order of Canada

A Carleton research professor and six community members with strong ties to the university have been named to the Order of Canada for their positive impacts and contributions to Canadian society and humanity at large. Their work includes the areas of Indigenous reconciliation, sport, culture, law, government, innovations in cartography, philanthropy and international relations.

Azrieli Grad Student Explores the Sustainable Reuse of a 50-year-old Sailboat

Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism graduate student Matthew Gillard purchased a 27-foot Catalina sailboat. The 50-year-old sailboat was originally destined for the junkyard but Gillard is now rebuilding it on campus for his master’s thesis that focuses on creating a sustainable reuse model.

If You Have to Come on Campus

Please be reminded that access to the tunnel system at Carleton University remains restricted to authorized individuals and those with approval to use the tunnels for accessibility purposes.

Anyone coming on campus must complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you also need to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit this as soon as possible. You can find the form in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Any university staff, faculty, or researchers who have cause to access federal government workplaces as a result of a grant or contract held by Carleton, where they may come into contact with public servants, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This is a mandatory federal government requirement.


Important Dates and Deadlines

Most offices on campus are operating virtually until further advised due to COVID restrictions. At this time, all classes are being held virtually.

Jan. 24, 2022:

  • Last day for registration for winter term courses.
  • Last day to change courses or sections (including auditing) for winter term courses.
  • Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Graduate Studies will not be eligible to graduate in winter 2022 and must register for the winter 2022 term.

Jan. 21-23 and 28-30:

  • Fall term deferred examinations will be held.

Jan. 31:

  • Last day for a fee adjustment when withdrawing from winter term courses or the winter portion of two-term courses (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to winter term fees and will result in a permanent notation of WDN appearing on your official transcript.

Feb. 18

  • April examination schedule available online.

Feb. 21

  • Statutory holiday. University closed.

Feb. 22-25

  • Winter Break. Classes are suspended.
