Introducing TRAJECTORIES: A Focused Approach to Professional Development

TRAJECTORIES is a professional development program that offers graduate students and postdocs the opportunity to enhance their transferable skills and earn non-credit certificates. Participants interested in earning a certificate attend core and elective workshops, complete self-reflection exercises, and prepare a one-year action plan all while receiving individual guidance throughout the process.


Graduate Students' Association/Library Fall Orientation Event

This year’s co-sponsored GSA/Library Fall orientation event will be held on Wednesday, September 14 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. To ensure we make this as accommodating as possible, we’re offering our presentations from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. as a hybrid event (in-person and virtual). Join us in person in room 252 A & B at the library or on Zoom (Passcode: 671175) as we run through the many services and supports we can offer throughout your time here.


International Orientation Sessions for Late Arrivals

International students arriving in Ottawa after classes begin continue to have opportunities to receive an orientation to the Carleton community. The International Student Services Office is hosting International Orientation Sessions in September to help you prepare for your life in Canada. Attend our 90-minute sessions to discover essential information for your first weeks to Ottawa, understand the University Health Insurance Plan and immigration compliance considerations, and recognize key support services across campus and when to access them. Sessions will be offered in-person (Sept. 13) and online (Sept. 15).


Awards and Funding Updates

  • Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement – Applications for the October 2022 competition are now open. Internal submission deadline is September 26, 2022.
  • Donor-Funded Awards – The Fall 2022 competition is now open! Deadline to apply is September 30, 2022 (11:59PM EST).
  • Indigenous Graduate Student Award – Applications are now open! This award is available for Canadian First Nation, Metis or Inuit Master’s or Doctoral graduate students. Recipients will be selected based on demonstrated financial need and academic merit. Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation to verify ancestry. The application deadline is September 30, 2022 (11:59PM EST).
  • Canada Graduate Scholarships:
    Doctoral Program (CGSD)
     – Applications are now open! Students must apply via the appropriate agency portal. Full details can be found hereDeadlines: NSERC PhD: September 26, 2022 11:59PM (EST); SSHRC PhD: September 30, 2022 11:59PM (EST); CIHR PhD: September 30, 2022 11:59PM (EST).
    Master’s Program (CGSM) 
    – Applications are now open! Students must apply through the Research Portal for all three granting agencies. Full details can be found here. Deadline to apply is December 1, 2022 before 8 PM (EST).
  • Ontario Graduate Scholarship – Applications are now open! Deadline to apply is November 15, 2022 (11:59PM EST). Referee deadline is December 1, 2022. For full details on eligibility, deadlines and application processes, please visit the Carleton OGS website.

Writing Support by CSAS

Join the Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) this Fall 2022 term for their Academic Writing for English Language Learners sessions on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pick and choose the session that works for you or join all of them!

First session on September 14, 2022 will review the foundational structure and organization of academic writing. For questions, email: csas@carleton.ca

Government of Canada Launches Pilot Initiative to Further Support Indigenous Master’s Students

Offered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and SSHRC, the pilot initiative will provide, to the limit of available funding, a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s program (CGS M) award holders, and provide a $17,500 award and a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous candidates who are on the waitlist for the CGS M program. Applicants will use the same application form and follow the same application process as for the CGS M competition. MacOdrum Library

Carleton’s MacOdrum Library offers many services to help graduate students. Please visit their website to find out more. There are silent study spaces on Floors 3 and 5 which may be disrupted due to renovation noise. Floor 5 is likely your best bet for silence.


Carleton Athletics

Adaptive Sports Programs: No matter your fitness experience or abilities, you can participate and thrive in our adaptive sports and recreation programs that are open to all members of the Carleton and Ottawa Community. We offer an Adaptive Strength and Flexibility and All Inclusive Dance classes, Adaptive Boccia, Wheelchair Basketball and Adaptive Personal Training in our accessible facilities. CUFit: We offer a variety of classes including Zumba, Kickboxing, Pilates, Yoga, HIIT, Spin, and so much more. There is something for everyone and for only $190, you can take CUFit classes for the entire 2022/2023 academic year.

Instructional: Try new and fun ways of staying fit through a variety of instructional fitness classes offering something for everyone. Learn how to skate at our Beginner /Intermediate Skating class on Monday afternoons or move to music at our Dance Vibes class on Wednesday evenings.


Authentication Now Required for Your Carleton Zoom Account for Meetings

To enhance security, authentication is now required by default for all Carleton Zoom meetings, so that only users who have securely signed into their Carleton account can join. Sign into your Carleton Zoom account using your MyCarletonOne credentials to make sure you can access your online classes and meetings.

If you need help with Zoom, don’t forget to visit the Zoom at Carleton support site or contact Zoom Support.


Carleton Ravens - Upcoming Varsity Events

Come cheer on your Carleton Ravens all month long by attending football, rugby and soccer home games at TAAG Park! Every week in September you’ll find the Ravens defending their territory and they want your support. You can find the full home schedule here. Be sure to purchase your tickets early to get the best seat in the house.


Important Dates and Deadlines

Sept. 13
Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) in early fall courses.

Sept. 14
OSAP deferral deadline. Late payment charges and late registration charges applied to the student account on or after this date for eligible OSAP students.

Sept. 20

  • Last day of registration for full fall, late fall term and fall/winter courses;
  • Last day to withdraw from early fall courses with a full fee adjustment. Withdrawals after this date will result in a permanent notation of WDN on the official transcript;
  • Last day to change courses or sections (including auditing) for fall term and fall/winter courses;
  • Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Graduate Studies will not be eligible to graduate in Fall 2022 and must register for the fall 2022 term.

Sept. 23-25
Late summer and full summer term deferred final examinations will be held.

Sept. 30

  • Last day to withdraw from full fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to fall term fees and will result in a permanent notation of WDN appearing on your official transcript;
  • Last day to request Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for Oct./Nov. final examinations to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities. Note: it may not be possible to fulfil accommodation requests received after the specified deadlines.

Oct. 1
Last day for academic withdrawal from early fall courses.

Oct. 7
December examination schedule (fall term final and fall/winter mid-terms) available online.

Oct. 10
Statutory Holiday. University closed.
