Vaccination Requirements for This Fall
In light of the rising Delta variant and evolving public health advice, Carleton is implementing vaccination requirements for campus access for fall 2021. In order to be granted full access to campus, all members of the Carleton community—including all students, faculty, and staff— will be required to have received a full course of a Health Canada or World Health Organization approved vaccine, for at least 14 days.

For fall, 2021, a significant proportion of courses are expected to be offered on campus in a safe way, but online options will also be available to provide flexibility. You can find out more about fall and winter courses by clicking here on the University FAQs.
The fall/winter 2021-22 class schedule and registration course planning tool is available in Carleton Central and includes which courses will be available for in-person and online learning. Please note, you cannot register unless you have cleared all conditions on your offer. Your time ticket will be updated in your Carleton Central account, after the removal of your conditions is complete.

Graduate Studies Front Desk Re-opens on Aug. 23
The Graduate Studies office will reopen for in-person services starting August 23, 2021. The student services front desk will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and from 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Note that the front desk will be closed between 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we gradually return to on-campus activities.

Orientation for New Students and TAs
Graduate Studies is hosting a virtual fall 2021 Orientation for new grad students and TAs. Details will be available in a future newsletter but materials will be available by September 7. Register now by clicking here.
In addition, international students are also encouraged to register for a special Orientation presented by the International Student Service Office. This Orientation includes an introduction to resources found in the virtual campus, live events that offer the opportunity to ask questions about immigration, and much more! The l-Start Orientation program offers a go-at-your-own-pace format. Click here for more information.

This is a reminder that the Tuition fee payment deadline is August 25. Late charges will apply to outstanding balances.

Interim Science Dean Focused on Safe Return to Campus and Big-Picture Goals
As a mid-career scientist and teacher, Carleton University Chemistry Prof. Maria DeRosa has her hands full in the lab and classroom. She’s built a successful research program and is also supporting and mentoring dozens of students and is halfway through a two-year term as chair of the Department of Chemistry. But when Faculty of Science Dean Chuck Macdonald decided to return to his hometown of Halifax to take on the same role at Dalhousie University, DeRosa didn’t shy away when asked to serve as interim dean until June 30, 2022. New Study Finds the Future of Recreational Fishing is at Risk Due to Climate Change
Globally, freshwater recreational fishing is at risk due to climate change and a new study finds that not enough is being done to save it. “This study is the first global assessment of the vulnerability of recreational fish species to climate change, and it is unique because it compares freshwater fish and saltwater fish,” said Beth Nyboer, lead author and postdoctoral fellow at Carleton University.

Carleton Researchers Discover Timing Is Everything When Birds Trick Predators
In nature, most animals are at risk of being attacked by predators. This has led many species to use camouflage as a means of avoiding detection. However, the effectiveness of camouflage is significantly reduced when the animal moves, leading to the need for defence adaptations when in motion. One such adaptation, flash behaviour, is the focus of newly-published research by Carleton biology researchers Karl Loeffler-Henry and Tom Sherratt, and Changku Kang (former Carleton Postdoctoral Fellow and now Professor at Mokpo National University, South Korea).

Enzyme Discovery Will Decrease Dangerous Toxins in Corn Production
Mark Sumarah, an adjunct research professor with Carleton’s Department of Chemistry and a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and his team have discovered an enzyme to detoxify dangerous toxins to keep corn healthy for consumption.

New Study Finds Financial Motives Are Integral to Problem Gambling Behaviour
Nassim Tabri, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Mental Health and Addictions Laboratory at Carleton, along with Dr. Luke Clark from the University of British Columbia, recently published a meta-analysis of the gambling addiction literature in Addiction, a leading journal in the field. They found financial motives were associated with increased gambling frequency and the level of a gambling problem.

New Handbook Sets a Vision for the Evolution of Outdoor Dining in Ottawa
Researchers at Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism have developed a design handbook that proposes new ways to enjoy safe outdoor dining in Ottawa during and after pandemic restrictions. Titled Dinner in the Street: Dining Safely and Socially in the Pandemic City and Beyond, the project aims to help the restaurant industry and enhance public life while maintaining physical distancing for public health. It also looks for opportunities for local food production and better serving the underserved.

Important Dates and Deadlines
August 25: Fall payment deadline. Visit the Student Accounts website for important payment information. Late charges may be applied to the student account any time after this date.
September 1: Last day for receipt of applications from potential fall (November) graduates.
September 6: Statutory holiday. University closed.
September 8: Fall term begins and fall and fall/winter classes begin.
September 17-19: Full and late summer deferred final examinations held.
September 22:
- Last day of registration for fall term and fall/winter courses.
- Last day to change courses or sections (including auditing) for fall term and fall/winter courses.
- Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Graduate Studies will not be eligible to graduate in fall 2021 and must register for the fall 2021 term.
September 30: Last day to withdraw from fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal). Withdrawals after this date will create no financial change to fall term fees and will result in a permanent notation of WDN appearing on your official transcript.
