Update Your Skills
Showcase Your Research in the 3MT and/or GRADflix
You can still participate in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) and GRADflix competitions, sponsored by the Graduate Studies. Why not enter and tell your research story? One-on-one assistance is available. The 3MT is scheduled for April 6 and GRADflix will be held a couple of weeks later. If you are interested in competing in either contest, please click here

Tax Return Assistance
The Sprott Tax Students’ Association is here to help with its annual tax clinic. If interested, you must first fill out the tax clinic’s client intake form. You will then receive an email indicating whether your tax return fits the scope of the tax clinic and, if so, you will be given a link to book an appointment. All appointments will be held between March 21 and April 1. For more information, please visit the tax clinic’s webpage. The tax clinic is run as a free community service.

Health & Counselling is Now Seeing Students in Person
Need help? A listening ear? There are several health and counselling resources that graduate students can access. Please click here to see these resources. There are lots of other resources available to you.
The Psychology Wellness Centre is a virtual centre staffed by psychology graduate students who are trained peer wellness coaches. If you are looking for non-urgent assistance with goal-setting, time-management, support to improve wellness goals, and information on other available wellness services at Carleton please complete this request form to meet with a peer wellness coach.

Award Information
Graduate students will be informed of their scholarship status by the following approximate dates:
- OGS: End of March
- NSERC PhD: End of April
- SSHRC PhD: End of April
- CIHR PhD: End of April
- CGS Master’s (all): April 1 through the portal
The Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) is now accepting student applications for the Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Research Award, which provides student funding of $10,000 to $15,000 for EDI-informed research supervised by a faculty member. One graduate student award is available for this summer (May 1 to August 30). Applications are due April 8 at 5 p.m. You will need to provide a letter of support from a faculty member indicating their willingness to supervise your project. Additional details, including project eligibility and application instructions, are available on the Provost’s website.
Nominations are now open for two Board of Governors awards. The nomination deadline for both is March 25. The Founders Award is Carleton’s highest non-academic honour. Do you know someone deserving? Nominate them today and help pay tribute to those whose significant contributions have led to the advancement of Carleton University. Learn more. And the Board of Governors’ Award for Outstanding Community Achievement recognizes the substantial community contribution and volunteerism of a Carleton student graduating in 2022. The award recipient will receive a $2,000 grant. Nominations are welcome from all community members. Find out more.
The TLS Outstanding TA Award is designed to celebrate the support TAs give to the undergraduate programs in their disciplines, their roles in establishing a positive learning environment, and their work in implementing innovative teaching practices. Up to five awards, valued at $250, will be given out. For more information on the nomination process as well as the form to fill out and submit, please click here. Deadline for nominations is March 28.

Carleton360 Fully Launched
Carleton has now fully launched the Carleton360 Student Portal (My360). My360 is your complete student experience hub, replacing the MyCarleton portal, which is now retired. Within My360, you have direct single sign-on access to Carleton Central, cMail and Brightspace. My360 also includes an In Tray for important university messages and news. You can now access internal degree transfer applications and new electronic Third Party Release forms. For more information, please log into Carleton360 through the current grad students website.
Please note: Due to scheduled system maintenance, Carleton360 will be unavailable on Tuesday, March 22 from 8:00 a.m. to Thursday, March 24 at 8:00 a.m. EDT.

Serve on a Carleton Senate Standing Committee
The Carleton University Senate is seeking graduate students to serve on a variety of Senate Standing Committees for a one-year term, beginning July 1, 2022. Have Your Say About Two Important Documents
We are continuing to accept feedback from all members of the Carleton community on the draft Student Mental Health Framework until Friday, March 18, 2022. Feedback and comments can be submitted either on the consultation website, or by email at SMHFramework@carleton.ca.
We have published a draft version of the revised Sexual Violence Policy with tracked changes. As part of our commitment to providing a transparent process, we have posted a report outlining the feedback we received throughout the listening phase. Both documents are available on the consultation website. Students are encouraged to review the revised draft of the policy and provide additional feedback and comments by attending an information and feedback session on Monday, March 21, 2022 or by submitting feedback through the consultation website or by email at svpolicy@carleton.ca. Feedback on the revised draft of the policy will continue to be collected until Friday, April 8, 2022.

For International Students
Eligible for a UHIP Refund? Have you been taking online classes from outside Canada this term? If so, the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) may not be required. Complete our opt-out form and, upon approval, the fee will be removed and credited to your student account. Please note that students who were inside Canada from September 1 and left the country afterword are not eligible for a refund. Please contact our UHIP Specialists with any questions you might have.

Carleton Researcher Challenges ‘Bigger is Better’ Approach to Land Protection
Congratuations to Carleton Professor Lenore Fahrig who was awarded the 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship. This Fellowship supports a research project looking at the effects of habitat fragmentation on several species. Fahrig is Chancellor’s Professor of Biology and co-director of the Geomatics and Landscape Ecology Research Laboratory at Carleton.

Celebrate Carleton’s 2021 Grad Student Co-op Award Winner
Meet the winner of the Graduate Coop Student of the Year Award. Danett VanTassel is a Migration and Diaspora MA Studies student who has completed an eight-month work term as a Junior Policy Analyst in the Strategic Policy and Planning Branch at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The Co-op Awards are presented each year to recognize the outstanding achievements, contributions and performances of co-op students and their employers.

Culture and Gender Mental Health Research Chair Continues Focus on Health Inequities in Underserved Communities
Carleton University and The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research have renewed their joint Culture and Gender Mental Health Research Chair held by Department of Neuroscience Professor Kim Matheson. In her second, five-year term, Matheson will continue to focus on health inequities in underserved communities. Her most recent work is in partnership with First Nations communities and organizations in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation region of Northwestern Ontario.

Research: Using Medical Robots to Reduce Risks for Health-Care Workers
In collaboration with doctors from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and with funding from Carleton’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Research Grants program, Mech and Aero Prof. Mojtaba Ahmadi and his Advanced Biomechatronics and Locomotion Laboratory quickly began developing a robot that can not only provide high-quality care but also keep health-care workers safe.

Grad Research: The Impact of Covid on How We Work
It’s been an unusual two years for students at Carleton and other universities. Many, including Sprott PhD Student Christina Dreger-Smylie, have spent part of that time working remotely. In fact, COVID-19 has impacted the landscape of many workplaces. The pandemic created an opportunity for Dreger-Smylie to examine the experiences of employees working from home during the pandemic and to help organizations develop post-pandemic work arrangements. She is leading projects with two Federal Government Departments.

Upcoming Events
On Friday March 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., you can attend the annual Underhill Colloquium. The theme, (Re)thinking History, showcases work going beyond the traditional bounds of academia including the sources being studied, the way we work, how we approach archives, how we share our work, the themes we consider and the communities involved. You’re also invited to attend the eighth annual Data Day conference on March 29. Researchers from across the university will be participating in panel discussions throughout the day and several students will be participating in the virtual poster competition and/or the industry networking portion of the event. MeWeRTH is continuing its Lived Experience Luncheon series in March, where they invite members in our community to present on their lived experience, highlighting any challenges they encountered and their resiliency in facing these challenges. Registration for the March 23 and March 30 events is available online.
On April 8, 6 to 9 p.m., the Society for Neuroscience Ottawa Chapter is back for its annual Brain and Mental Health Art show in support of the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre. If you would like to donate or display your artwork, please fill out this online submission form. The Art Show will be taking place at the Horticultural Building at Lansdowne. Coming on Campus?
Anyone coming on campus must still complete the COVID-19 screening self-assessment every day through cuScreen. You will also need to use a QR code when you enter buildings. And you need to complete and submit the vaccination attestation form which you can find in cuScreen after you have logged in.

Important Dates and Deadlines
April 1
Students who are graduating in Spring 2022 are required to complete the Graduation Application available in Carleton Central (via Carleton360) before the deadline of April 1, 2022.
April 12
- Last day to pay any remaining balance on your Student Account to avoid a hold on access to marks through Carleton Central and the release of transcripts and other official documents. An account balance may delay summer 2022 course selection.
- Winter term ends.
- Last day of winter term and fall/winter classes.
- Last day for academic withdrawal from winter term and fall/winter courses.
The summer 2022 class schedule is available in Carleton Central and via the public class schedule. Instructors were posted on March 14 and room information will be available on April 25. Registration information, including timetickets and important dates for the summer 2022 term, are posted at carleton.ca/registrar/registration
