International Doctoral Tuition Bursary – Extension Requests

If research progress has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, full-time international PhD students may request additional International Doctoral Tuition Bursary (IDTB) support for up to two (2) additional terms. The value of each additional term’s support is worth up to C$3,500.

Requests for additional IDTB support must be submitted to Graduate Studies within the final term of the five-year IDTB period; backdated requests will not be considered. All additional support requests must be reviewed and supported by the student’s academic unit. The form and requisite documentation must be completed by the student and submitted to their academic unit for review. Once reviewed and if in support of the request, the academic unit will then forward the form and all the requisite documentation directly to Graduate Studies by email at graduate.awards@carleton.ca. Please note that forms submitted by students to Graduate Studies will not be accepted.

Documentation that must be submitted alongside an IDTB Extension Request Form:

  1. One page letter from the student explaining the reason or reasons for the delay in program completion. The student is responsible for providing this document to their academic unit.
  2. One page letter from the student’s supervisor or supervisors. The student’s supervisor is responsible for providing this document to their academic unit.
  3. Timeline of activities to degree completion. The student is responsible for providing this document to their academic unit.
  4. Last two progress reports. The academic unit is responsible for providing these documents to Graduate Studies.
  5. Proof of completion of the PhD proposal and comprehensive exams, (as program applicable), demonstrated on the student’s audit. The academic unit is responsible for providing this document to Graduate Studies.
