Carleton University is profoundly saddened by the discovery of an estimated 751 unmarked graves on the site of the former Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. The announcement from Cowessess First Nation comes after the discovery in May of 215 Indigenous children’s remains at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc land.
The Carleton community stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities, students, faculty and staff as we remember the survivors of the residential school system, and with the families of those whose children never returned to them.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic finding, and campus flags are lowered to honour the spirit of each child.
