Several new people have joined or will be joining the Graduate Studies in the near future. Dean Patrice Smith says she is delighted at the new hires and appreciative of all of the work that was done by their predecessors.

  • Effective July 1, Ali Arya moves over from his current position at Graduate Studies to replace Paul Keen (Associate Dean, Student and Postdoctoral Affairs) who is taking a one-year sabbatical. Dr. Arya, who received a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia, has been with the Carleton School of Information Technology since 2006. He is an Associate Professor whose research area is on educational technology and virtual reality. He received an Graduate Studies Graduate Mentorship Award and FED Teaching Excellence Award in 2019, and Provost Fellowship in Teaching in 2020.
  • Effective July 1, Onita D. Basu (PEng) will replace Dr. Arya as the Associate Dean (Planning and Awards). She is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (effective July 1) who obtained her PhD from the University of Waterloo (Civil/Environmental Engineering). Dr. Basu specializes in ways to improve our bio-sustainability footprint through appropriate water and wastewater treatment process selection and optimization. She received a Carleton Graduate Studies Graduate Mentorship Award in 2021 and a Carleton Research Achievement Award in 2019.
  • Dan Siddiqi replaces James Opp as the Associate Dean (Programs) on July 1. He is a Professor of Linguistics in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies where he is the primary investigator for two SSHRC-funded research labs: one in morphology and another in linguistic metatheory and grammatical architecture. He has been a faculty member at Carleton since 2008. Recently, he served as Secretary of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Associate Director of SLaLS. He is also the co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Linguistics.
  • Kevin McEwan became the Acting Director, Graduate Services/Registrar at the beginning of May, replacing Joanne Bree. Prior to that, Kevin held a diversity of roles at Carleton in Graduate Studies, Undergraduate Admissions and Co-op. His experience extends beyond Carleton, including five years spent at the University of Alberta and two at Dalhousie University.
  • Effective July 12, Katelyn MacCormac replaces Kevin McEwan as the Graduate Studies Graduate Enrolment Management Officer. MacCormac comes to Graduate Studies from the undergraduate admission office, where she currently holds the position of the Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment Assistant.
  • Anna Russell-Mercier is joining the Graduate Studies team as the Student Systems Support Officer, effective July 5.  She has been at Carleton since 2011 working as an integral team member in the Academic Advising Centre (8 years) and, since 2019, has been working on the CRM team as a Project Officer and Subject Matter Expert. She replaces Wayne McGee who retired recently.
  • Finally, Jenna McConnell took over the role of Coordinator, External/Internal Graduate Awards on May 17. She replaced Leslie Main.
