As part of its 40th Anniversary celebration, the School of Industrial Design at Carleton hosted its first Masters of Design (MDes) exhibition and industry roundtable on Feb. 8.

The exhibition featured work by recent Master’s graduates from the Industrial Design program. The round table brought together students, academics and industry representative who discussed critical design challenges.

Grad Design ShowSpeakers at the roundtable included Michel Bouillon, senior manager at IBM; Jennifer Fraser, design director at Macadamian Technologies; Michael Lachapelle, founder of Business Model Fulcrum and partner with the Business Design Summit; Manu Sharma, founder and CEO of OAK Computing; and Luc Lalande, founder of True Innovators and managing partner of STEAMakers Guild.

“The exhibition focused on the interdisciplinary and interconnected nature of the research that has emerged during the first five years of the MDes program,” says Lorenzo Imbesi, associate professor with the School of Industrial Design. “As those who attended the exhibition could see, the quality and excellence of the projects being produced by our graduate students is outstanding.”

More than 700 students now hold prestigious design positions around the world, having graduated with a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Carleton. In 2009, the school established a Master of Design at Carleton, advancing the knowledge of design by building on the school’s experience and strengths in the field of design education. The two-year program of study examines and incorporates multifaceted design principles and practices that contribute to the strategic value of design.
