Carleton PhD students Sheena Kennedy Dalseg and Kelly Black have been researching the political economy of adult and post-secondary education in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut since the 1950s.

Their most recent initiative, Northern University Futures, is a presentation of the early stages of a background/discussion paper they are working on. This is part of a larger ArcticNet-funded project entitled Improving Access to Post-Secondary Education for Inuit.

Kennedy Dalseq recently gave this presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_QISyX_TtU&feature=youtu.be at the Arctic Change conference.

Kelly BlackBlack says their paper/presentation has three objectives:

  • To document and draw together divergent contemporary conversations about establishing a university in the North;
  • To situate the development of a university in the broader political economy and policy history of Northern Canada; and
  • By building on existing Canadian research, as well as on relevant domestic and international experiences, and our own research, we aim to identify key decision points and ideas for how to get started, including costing.

Black noted that their presentation was well received.
