The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA) bids farewell and best wishes to Joanne Bree, as she commences her retirement, effective June 1. Joanne is an exceptional leader and her tremendous skills and talent have guided FGPA to new heights throughout her tenure at Carleton.

In her role as Graduate Registrar and Director, Graduate Services, Joanne has made her mark on graduate studies at Carleton; her genuine care and concern for students has greatly contributed to enhancing student experience across the board at Carleton over the past 13 years.  Among her many accomplishments, Joanne has guided and spearheaded the development and implementation of many new initiatives, including most notably a move toward automation of systems to streamline numerous processes at the graduate level. Her efforts have resulted in the development of paperless approaches to many processes, including admissions, thesis submissions, awards, TA Management and a new research management system, to name a few.

Of particular note, Joanne has been an avid proponent and champion of excellence in student experience at Carleton and has driven and guided the development of well sought-after professional development programming for graduate students. Joanne is known for her outstanding leadership and problem solving skills and her sensible and straightforward approach to leadership.  She has made a positive difference in the lives of so many at Carleton and she will be sorely missed.  Dean Patrice Smith says: “Joanne is an exceptional leader and is beloved by students, staff and faculty across campus; her stellar leadership and exceptional approach to student support will be missed. I have enjoyed every moment working with Joanne in FGPA and wish her all the very best in her retirement.”

Through the transition, Kevin McEwan will be taking on the role of Acting Director, Graduate Services, effective May 1. Kevin continues to work closely with Joanne during the transition period. Dean Smith says: “Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and has very strong leadership qualities. He has been with FGPA for 3 years (at Carleton 5 years) and is respected and well-versed in the systems and processes that guide graduate student success. I have the utmost confidence that Kevin will be exceptional in his new role.”

Please join us in congratulating Joanne on this new chapter of her life and in welcoming Kevin into his new role!
